Job brief:

We are looking for a highly specialized Military Communications Liaison & Product Strategist to join the DROP team. In this pivotal role, you will bridge the gap between tactical operations and the DROP product team, serving as our primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) on military communications and Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) workflows.
You will act as the voice of the operator, ensuring our solutions are battle-ready, while simultaneously equipping our customers with the knowledge to deploy them effectively. Ultimately, this position directly reduces adoption risk, accelerates customer trust, and informs product strategy for mission-critical workflows.

This position is part of the Department of Defense (DoD) SkillBridge Program. SkillBridge provides active-duty service members the opportunity to gain civilian work experience during their last 180 days of service.
Applicants must be active-duty military, within 180 days of separation, and receive approval from their command to participate.

The impact you'll make:

Operational Networking SME & Customer Success (50%)

  • Act as the primary technical consultant for prospective and existing customers regarding operational networking and the deployment of TWC’s DROP solutions.
  • Conduct workshops, training sessions, and Q&A forums to educate users on how Drop Red functions within complex military communications networks.
  • Support Resilient Comms: Provide post-exercise feedback to Product teams to ensure DROP Red remains viable in contested, bandwidth-limited, and degraded environments (DDIL).
  • Troubleshoot and advise on waveform integration and network stand-up to ensure customers can effectively utilize Drop Red during exercises and downrange operations.

Product Strategy & Market Engagement (35%)

  • Market Representation: Represent The Weather Company and the DROP portfolio at military, SOF, aviation, and defense industry trade shows.
  • Demonstration & Briefing: Conduct live demonstrations and operational briefings for military units, defense contractors, and government stakeholders.
  • Subject Matter Expert: Serve as a trusted technical and operational authority in customer engagements, helping drive adoption and inform business development strategy.
  • Collaborate with Product and Design leadership to define features, data needs, and workflows that support the full mission activity cycle—from planning to execution to After Action Review (AAR).
  • Facilitate proof-of-concept testing and feedback loops by connecting the DROP product team with active-duty units.

Hardware Innovation & Prototyping (15%)

  • Leverage expertise in 3D printing, Raspberry Pi, and microelectronics to explore, design, and prototype hardware tools or components.
  • Develop physical proof-of-concept add-ons that enhance the utility of TWC’s DROP software products and provide tangible value to the warfighter.

What you've accomplished:

  • Operational Credibility: Minimum of 5 years of experience as a JTAC/TAC-P or Combat Controller (Senior Airman or higher). Completion of advanced military training pipelines (e.g., Airborne, Air Assault, SERE, Helocast, Rappel Master) demonstrates selection for high-risk, high-reliability operational roles.
  • Joint & SOF Exposure: Experience working alongside SOF and joint aviation elements, utilizing operational experience to inform requirements beyond conventional use cases.
  • C3U & Network Engineering: C3U Certified (or equivalent proficiency) in IP networking, radio topology design, and Cisco-based network architectures.
  • Tactical Integration: Applied experience integrating tactical radios, mesh networks, and edge compute systems in austere and denied environments. Proven ability to bridge RF, IP, and software layers to enable real-time data flow into mission systems such as ATAK.
  • ATAK/TAK Ecosystem: Demonstrated familiarity with the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK), TAK servers, and the hardware/software integration of TAK in operational environments.
  • Prototyping/Maker Skills: Hands-on experience with 3D printing, Raspberry Pi, and microelectronics device prototyping.
  • Clearance: Must possess an active Secret Security Clearance.

Nice to have

  • Experience bridging the gap between technical engineering teams and non-technical operational end-users.
  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills for conducting training and workshops.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a remote environment while maintaining close coordination with a distributed team.
SkillBridge Eligibility:
  • Active-duty service member within 180 days of separation.
  • Able to obtain command approval to participate.
  • Meets basic qualifications for the role

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
