About the Role

We are seeking a UX Designer & Researcher to help shape the continuing evolution of the Planful platform. This role splits its time between two disciplines. You will uncover what our finance users need through research, then turn those insights into wireframes, flows, and prototypes that reduce friction and make Planful a delight to use.

Reporting to the Team Lead, Product Design, you will work with Product Management, Engineering, and Content to solve complex, data-rich workflow challenges. You will ground your decisions in evidence from users, industry best-practice patterns, and the Planful Design System.

ResponsibilitiesResearch

  • Partner with Product, Customer Success, and Support to recruit participants and maintain an ongoing pipeline of customer conversations
  • Synthesize findings into clear, actionable deliverables such as personas, journey maps, opportunity areas, and insight summaries
  • Measure the impact of shipped designs using usability metrics, behavioral data, and customer feedback, and use the results to guide iteration
  • Build and maintain a shared research repository so insights are discoverable and reused across teams
  • Present findings and recommendations to internal stakeholders and customers, and help shape roadmap priorities with evidence
Design
  • Work with Product to define problem statements, and develop wireframes, user flows, and interaction storyboards that demonstrate end-to-end solutions
  • Design mockups and prototypes that follow the Planful Design System and brand guidelines, and iterate based on user and stakeholder feedback
  • Review competing products, industry conventions, and UX research to ensure solutions are well supported by evidence
  • Work closely with Engineering during development to navigate constraints and ensure the best achievable UX outcomes
  • Contribute to the Planful pattern library and help raise the standard of the team overall
  • Estimate your workload accurately so the team lead can plan and prioritize the backlog
  • Embody Planful’s values and contribute to a culture of having fun together and taking pride in building wonderful products
Requirements
  • 6-8 years of experience in UX research and design, ideally in enterprise or B2B SaaS
  • A portfolio that demonstrates both research and design work, showing how research findings shaped design decisions and outcomes
  • Hands-on experience with qualitative research methods (user interviews, usability testing, needs analysis) and familiarity with quantitative methods (surveys, analytics review)
  • Experience creating user-centered artifacts such as personas, scenarios, journey maps, and information architecture
  • Proficiency in Claude and Figma for wireframing, prototyping, and working within a design system
  • Experience working collaboratively with product managers and engineers throughout the design and development cycle
  • Strong communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to present research and design rationale to varied audiences

Preferred Experience
  • Prior financial domain experience (FP&A, accounting, consolidations, reporting), or at least some finance domain knowledge
  • Experience designing for data-dense products such as grids, dashboards, and reporting tools
  • Experience designing or researching AI-powered or agentic experiences, and comfort using AI tools in your daily design and research workflow
  • Experience with research tools such as UserTesting, Maze, Dovetail, or similar

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
