  • Manage the relationship with external tax advisors and oversee the timely, accurate preparation of tax deliverables.
  • Oversee federal, state, and local income tax compliance, including returns, extensions, and estimated payments.
  • Manage indirect tax compliance, including sales and use tax, property tax, business licenses, and annual reports, and evaluate nexus as the business expands.
  • Oversee international tax compliance for foreign subsidiaries, including Forms 5471/8858, GILTI/Subpart F calculations, VAT/GST, and transfer pricing documentation.
  • Maintain the tax calendar and respond to notices, inquiries, and audits from tax authorities.
  • Lead tax planning initiatives, including R&D tax credit studies, Section 174/174A research expenditure treatment, Section 382 analysis of NOL and credit carryforwards, and entity structuring.
  • Advise on the tax implications of M&A, licensing arrangements, equity and debt financing, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Support tax-related disclosures on Forms 10-K and 10-Q.
  • Design, document, and maintain SOX-compliant internal controls over the tax provision and tax compliance processes.
  • Collaborate with Accounting, FP&A, Legal, HR/Payroll, Stock Admin, and Operations on tax matters, including employee equity programs, cash taxes, and the effective tax rate forecast.
  • Monitor tax legislation and regulatory developments and assess their impact on the Company.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Taxation. Master’s in Taxation or MBA preferred.
  • Certification: CPA required.
  • Experience:
    • 8+ years of progressive corporate income tax experience, including Big 4 or national firm experience and ideally 2+ years in-house. Must have demonstrated ownership of a public company’s quarterly and annual provision and experience managing outside advisors or leading a team.
  • Skills:
    • Deep knowledge of ASC 740 and U.S. federal, state, and international tax law.
    • Working knowledge of R&D tax credits, Section 174/174A, Section 382, GILTI/Subpart F, and transfer pricing.
    • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters to non-tax audiences.
    • Proficiency in NetSuite, Excel, and tax provision and compliance software.

Preferred Attributes:

  • Experience in the life sciences, biotech, or medical device industry.
  • Experience with international subsidiaries, intercompany transactions, and consolidations.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
