About GPL Technologies
GPL Technologies is a managed services, infrastructure, and technology services company serving media, entertainment, post-production, creative, and enterprise clients. We support complex studio environments where uptime, performance, security, and production continuity matter.
We are looking for a Senior Systems Engineer based in the Greater Los Angeles area who can support our LA-based clients onsite. This is not a remote role. The right candidate must be comfortable working hands-on in client environments, supporting production systems, and helping build reliable infrastructure for creative and technical teams.
Position Overview
The Senior Systems Engineer will be responsible for designing, supporting, troubleshooting, and improving client technology environments. This person should be capable of supporting a studio or production environment from the ground up, including Linux, Windows, macOS, networking, storage, virtualization, backup, security, and monitoring.
The ideal candidate has strong MSP experience, excellent Linux knowledge, and the ability to work across multiple client environments. Studio, post-production, VFX, or media and entertainment experience is highly valuable.
This role requires strong technical depth, professional client communication, and the ability to solve problems quickly in high-pressure production environments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide onsite and remote technical support for GPL’s Los Angeles-based clients.
  • Design, deploy, and support infrastructure for studios, post-production companies, creative agencies, and enterprise clients.
  • Administer Linux, Windows, and macOS environments.
  • Support shared storage platforms, high-performance workstations, creative workflows, and production networks.
  • Troubleshoot performance issues across servers, storage, networks, endpoints, and applications.
  • Support Active Directory, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, DNS, DHCP, VPN, firewalls, and identity systems.
  • Manage virtualization environments such as VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, or Nutanix.
  • Assist with backup, disaster recovery, monitoring, patching, and security hardening to comply with industry standards and prepare clients for routine audits.
  • Create clear documentation, diagrams, runbooks, and client environment notes.
  • Work closely with GPL account managers, project managers, engineering leadership, and field engineers.
  • Escalate issues appropriately and communicate clearly with clients during outages or production-impacting events.
  • Help reduce single-person dependencies by creating repeatable systems, standards, and documentation.
Required Skills
  • Strong Linux administration experience across major distributions such as Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, or CentOS.
  • Experience supporting Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and file services.
  • Experience supporting macOS workstations in professional environments.
  • Strong networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching, VPNs, firewalls, and DNS troubleshooting.
  • Experience with shared storage, NAS/SAN systems, permissions, snapshots, replication, and backup workflows.
  • Experience with virtualization platforms such as VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, or Nutanix.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues across systems, networks, storage, and endpoints.
  • Strong documentation and ticketing discipline.
  • Strong client-facing communication skills.
  • Ability to work onsite throughout Greater Los Angeles as required.
Preferred Experience
  • MSP experience strongly preferred.
  • Media and entertainment, post-production, VFX, animation, editorial, or creative studio experience preferred.
  • Experience with Qumulo, Dell PowerScale/Isilon, TrueNAS, NetApp, or similar storage platforms.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, Avid, DaVinci Resolve, Autodesk tools, render farms, or production pipeline environments.
  • Experience with scripting or automation using Bash, PowerShell, Python, Ansible, or similar tools.
  • Experience with monitoring, RMM, MDM, endpoint protection, and backup platforms.
  • Cloud experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud is a plus.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a senior-level engineer who can walk into a client environment, understand the technical and business priorities, identify risk, stabilize systems, and create a practical plan for improvement.
This person should be equally comfortable troubleshooting a Linux server, diagnosing storage performance, supporting a macOS workstation, reviewing firewall rules, documenting an environment, and explaining technical issues to a client in plain English.
We are especially interested in candidates who have worked in an MSP environment and understand the pace, variety, and accountability required when supporting multiple clients.
Location Requirement
This role is based in Greater Los Angeles. Onsite work is required for GPL’s LA-based clients.
Candidates must already be located in the Los Angeles area or be able to reliably support onsite client work in Los Angeles.
Remote-only candidates will not be considered.
Why This Role Matters
GPL supports production environments where downtime can directly affect artists, editors, producers, and business operations. This role is critical to improving client service, strengthening our engineering bench, and giving our LA-based clients the onsite senior technical support they need.
The right engineer will have a major impact on client satisfaction, operational quality, and GPL’s ability to scale its managed services and project delivery.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
