Job Description
BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems (SMS) is seeking a high-performing Systems Engineer to specialize in the modeling and simulation of complex remote sensing "Systems of Systems." In this role, you will develop the digital blueprints that the U.S. Government uses to understand modern engagement environments and shape the strategic priorities of tomorrow.
You will operate at the intersection of systems engineering and software development, leveraging AFSIM, C++, and Python to build high-fidelity models that provide critical data for strategic planning and policy. This is an opportunity for a digital engineer who thrives on translating complex mission requirements into scalable, cloud-native software artifacts.
You will be a key contributor to "Digital Engineering Excellence," ensuring that our models are accurate, validated, and integrated into a modern, automated lifecycle.
The Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers' missions. Our collaborative, cross-functional teams are committed to innovation, integrity, continual learning and strong execution.
What You'll Do:
  • Advanced Modeling & Simulation:
    • Systems of Systems Design: Define and capture the requirements, design, and employment of complex remote sensing systems, ensuring they are optimized for future engagement environments.
    • High-Fidelity Development: Write and optimize models and analysis tools using C++ and Python within Linux and Windows environments, primarily leveraging AFSIM.
    • Digital Thread Integration: Execute the integration of MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) tools into the model lifecycle, ensuring seamless interaction between external system models and internal designs.
  • Cloud-Native Engineering & DevOps:
    • CI/CD Deployment: Develop and deploy software artifacts to secure cloud environments using established CI/CD pipelines, supporting a cloud-native operational model.
    • Tooling & Automation: Create custom analysis tools and testing frameworks that increase the velocity and accuracy of the software development cycle.
  • Strategic Transformation & Execution:
    • Operational Evolution: Analyze current ("As-Is") workflows and design the transition to optimized ("To-Be") states, providing the technical roadmap for system modernization.
    • Process Innovation: Develop standard, repeatable processes for the development and integration of remote sensing models to ensure scalability across multiple projects.
    • Technical Expertise: Serve as a primary point of contact for digital engineering, providing the technical strategies that connect projects and customer needs.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills
  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 4 or more years related experience
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., master's degree and/or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • A current, active Secret security clearance is required with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI.
  • Technical Foundation & Domain Expertise:
    • Excellent Python skills are essential. We view your arrival as the start of a continuous learning journey; we will provide the training and resources needed to expand your toolkit into other specialized packages.
    • Proficiency in C++ and Python.
    • Working MBSE knowledge and the ability to create functional models and activity diagrams that drive real-world design.. A deep interest in using AFSIM or similar modeling tools to solve complex problems.
    • Comfortability in a Linux environment and understand how to move code through a CI/CD pipeline into a secure cloud.
    • Ability to look at a complex system and identify the most efficient path to move it from its current state to its optimal future state.
  • Communication & Collaborative Excellence:
    • Translate complex analysis into clear, engaging narratives for internal partners and external customers while communicating professionally across all organizational levels.• Excels in small, high-impact teams by fostering collaboration, open communication, and shared success.

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
