ABOUT THE JOB

Company Intro:TurbineOne is the frontline perception company. We deliver decision advantage, better situational awareness, and stronger force protection. Our customers love how we automate the right portions of the military intelligence cycle while keeping them in the loop. The company is a small, fast-moving, and high-performance startup that is backed by the best DefenseTech venture capitalists.

We're looking for a Senior or Staff Product Designer who has a track record leading design projects from ambiguous problem statements to polished, shipped experiences. You're equally comfortable in the weeds of a complex workflow and zooming out to ask whether we're solving the right problem. You care deeply about the people using your products, and in our case, those people operate in some of the most demanding environments imaginable.

Job Title: Senior / Staff Product Designer
  • Reporting to Head of Product Design
  • Geographically flexible for home-office, some travel required
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead design projects end-to-end, utilizing user-centered design processes that result in high quality, industry-defining product experiences
  • Collaborate with other designers, engineers, and cross-functional partners to understand requirements, gather feedback, and negotiate trade-offs
  • Design for edge cases, failure states, and operational risks in high-stakes environments
  • Develop a working understanding of the ML and AI technologies used in our products to elevate every user experience
  • Contribute to and evolve an established design system, maintaining cohesion across the product and efficiency across the team
  • Not let perfection get in the way of being great
Desired Experience:
  • 6+ years working in Product Design or related fields
  • Proven ability to translate operational complexity and ambiguity into simple, intuitive experiences
  • Demonstrable experience working cross-functionally with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders
  • Understanding and application of a range of user research methodologies, and knowing which approach best fits each problem
  • Proficiency with modern design tools such as Figma, prototyping tools, research tools, design systems, and AI-powered design workflows
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and programming concepts to facilitate communication with engineers and understand technical constraints
  • Bonus: Experience working for or with the U.S. Military
Startup Culture Expectations:
  • We’re a small, fully remote team and everything is our responsibility.
  • Our team thrives on autonomy, trust, and solid communication.
  • Everyone on the Team needs to be very comfortable with constant change, moving fast, sharing failures, embracing grit, and building things themselves. Most startups fail and no one will come to save us.
Eligibility:
  • Must be eligible to obtain a clearance with the U.S. government
  • Must have an online design portfolio

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
