Job Description
About the Role
Citadel Securities is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design and build critical data platforms in a high-performance, time-sensitive environment. This is a hands-on engineering role with a strong emphasis on development, paired with end-to-end ownership of the systems you create in production.
You will work closely with senior business and operational stakeholders to translate urgent, real-world data needs into scalable, reliable, and production-grade software.
What You'll Do
Core Responsibilities (Development-Focused)
  • Design, build, and maintain high-performance data services and platforms with a focus on correctness, scalability, and efficiency
  • Develop Python-based services, libraries, and tooling to support data delivery and operational workflows
  • Architect systems that interact with large-scale databases and distributed data stores
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to improve system architecture, deployment strategies, and production readiness
  • Own systems end-to-end, from initial design through deployment and ongoing production support

Reliability & Operations (SRE-Oriented)
  • Ensure the reliability and availability of production systems through monitoring, alerting, and incident response
  • Participate in incident management and rapid-response troubleshooting
  • Improve system resilience through automation, observability, and operational tooling
  • Support Linux-based environments, containerized services, and networking infrastructure

What We're Looking For
Technical Skills
  • Strong software engineering experience with deep expertise in Python
  • Extensive experience working with databases and data-intensive systems
  • Deep understanding of Linux systems and production environments
  • Experience with Kubernetes, containerization, and service networking (e.g., NGINX, load balancing)
  • Familiarity with SRE best practices, including monitoring, alerting, on-call support, and post-incident analysis

Experience & Attributes
  • 10+ years of experience building and operating production systems
  • Proven ability to perform under pressure and deliver in time-critical situations
  • Experience working directly with senior stakeholders and business leaders
  • Strong sense of ownership with the ability to drive ambiguous problems to completion
  • Clear and effective communicator, especially during high-stakes or time-sensitive situations

Why Join Us
This role offers the opportunity to build impactful, business-critical systems while maintaining full ownership of their performance in production. You'll operate in an environment that values execution, precision, and reliability-where your work has immediate and visible impact.
In accordance with applicable law, the base salary range for this role is $150,000 to $300,000.
In addition, the employee who fills this role will be eligible to participate in a discretionary incentive compensation program, as well as a wide array of benefit programs, such as medical and life insurance, retirement and tax-free savings plans, and access to other healthcare programs.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
