We are seeking a Senior Engineer to join our new Member AI Features team. This team is critical to SoFi’s member experience and operational integrity, ensuring that members can manage their spending with transparency and ease.

In this role, you will architect and build the logic that powers spending management lifecycles—focusing on the complex workflows behind managing spending with LLM-powered workflows and automation. What you’ll do:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience

  • Participate in shaping the technical architecture of our membership platform, ensuring systems are highly available, observable, and capable of handling high-volume event processing.
  • Partner with Product Managers and Designers to translate business requirements—like churn reduction strategies or regulatory compliance—into robust technical solutions.
  • Lead code and design reviews, setting a high bar for backend reliability and data consistency. You’ll be responsible for ensuring that a member’s intent to cancel is processed accurately every time.
  • Support the growth of the engineering team through technical guidance, mentorship of junior engineers, and fostering a culture of operational excellence.
  • Own the full lifecycle of your services, from implementation and testing to deployment (CI/CD), monitoring, and on-call support.

What you’ll need:

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, with a focus on backend systems at scale.Technical Stack: Deep proficiency in Kotlin or Java and experience with the Spring Boot framework.
  • Experience designing and operating distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka, SQS, or RabbitMQ).
  • Solid understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred), data modeling, and performance tuning for high-traffic applications.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud environments (AWS preferred) and containerization tools like Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Pragmatism: A "get-it-done" mindset—balancing the need for engineering excellence with the speed required to deliver business value to our members.
  • Clear, effective communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have:

  • Experience building intuitive and accessible user interfaces with React/TypeScript
  • Experience integrating Large Language Models (LLM) into products
  • Experience scaling highly available, mission critical systems
  • Full-stack experience across backend and frontend
  • History of building digital products in the financial space

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
