*This will be a remote role to start, with plans to transition to hybrid in-office 2x/week located in downtown Toronto.

With millions of diners, 60,000+ restaurant partners and 25+ years of experience, OpenTable, part of Booking Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: BKNG), is an industry leader with a passion for helping restaurants thrive. Our world-class technology empowers restaurants to focus on what matters most – their team, their guests, and their bottom line – while enabling diners to discover and book the perfect restaurant for every occasion.

Every employee at OpenTable has a tangible impact on what we do and how we do it. You’ll also be part of a global team and its portfolio of metasearch brands. Hospitality is all about taking care of others, and it defines our culture.

At OpenTable, we take pleasure in Software Development. We believe that velocity comes from a commitment to clean code and solid engineering principles. We deliver innovative products through rapid, continuous development. Millions of diners and thousands of restaurants around the globe use our products. If you are excited by constantly meaningful engineering processes and can deliver exceptional quality in a fast-paced, agile environment, we'd like to meet you. Bonus points if you love restaurants too.

What You’ll Work On

You will be a Senior Software Engineer working on the frontend on the Availability Planning and Experiences team. The Availability Planning system is the engine that powers our OpenTable for Restaurants product . It is where a Restaurant goes to define their schedule and shifts, as well as the placement of their tables; and it has a complex array of settings to control how those tables are utilized by their diners. As we keep adding more controls, we are always thinking about how we can ensure these controls interact with each other in sensible ways, and how we can give Restaurants precise control and power without making it too complex for them to use. We also enable Restaurants to create their own Experiences, providing an increasing number of ways in which Restaurants can define interesting and unique events for their customers to attend.

Our codebase uses JavaScript and TypeScript with the React and Redux frameworks. We make extensive use of testing using the React Testing library, Jest, and Cypress.

Requirements

  • You have 5 or more years of full-time professional experience working in a team environment

  • You have strong communication skills, especially the ability to represent the technical trade-offs between different potential solutions

  • You can drive projects from technical planning all the way to production

  • You write code that is readable and maintainable

  • You are proficient in JavaScript, Node.js, and React. (Knowledge of TypeScript is a bonus.)

  • You carefully test your work for bugs while ensuring consistency with requirements and designs. You also build automated tests and understand how to use them properly.

  • You have experience implementing designs and collaborating with designers using tools like Figma

  • You invest in the architecture of the code you are writing. You create abstractions; find opportunities to create generic and reusable code; and build an integration layer between the UI and backend systems, rather than putting everything directly in the UI layer.

  • You show full ownership over the code you write, and you take the time to learn things you are working on which you don’t understand.

  • You’ve worked on codebases that were several years old before you started working on them

  • You are comfortable providing feedback to others via a code review process, and receiving feedback others have provided to you via this process

  • You adopt emerging AI technologies like Copilot and ChatGPT to enhance your workflow, while also taking ownership of the results produced by these technologies and carefully checking them for accuracy.

Benefits and Perks

  • Generous paid vacation + time off for your birthday

  • Work from (almost) anywhere for up to 20 days per year

  • Focus on mental health and well-being:

    • Company-paid therapy sessions through SpringHealth

    • Company-paid subscription to Headspace

    • Annual company-wide week off a year - the whole team fully recharges (and returns without a pile-up of work!)

  • Paid parental leave

  • Paid volunteer time

  • Focus on your career growth:

    • Development Dollars

    • Leadership development

    • Access to thousands of on-demand e-learnings

  • Travel Discounts

  • Employee Resource Groups

  • Private health and dental insurance

  • Life and Disability insurance

There are a variety of factors that go into determining a salary range, including but not limited to external market benchmark data, geographic location, and years of experience sought/required. The range for this Toronto, Canada based role is $135,000-$165,000 CAD.

We offer a competitive base salary and benefits including: health benefits; flexible spending account; retirement benefits; life insurance; paid time off (including PTO, paid sick leave, medical leave, bereavement leave, floating holidays and paid holidays); and parental leave benefits. This role is eligible to be considered for an annual bonus and equity grant.

Work Environment & Flexibility

At OpenTable, we pride ourselves on fostering a global and dynamic work environment. As a team member with us, you will benefit from a schedule tailored to accommodate a global workforce operating across multiple time zones. While the majority of your responsibilities may align with conventional business hours, there will be instances where you are expected to manage communications - via calls, Slack messages, or emails - outside of regular working hours to effectively collaborate with international colleagues, respond to restaurant partners, and/or address urgent matters. OpenTable will always abide by and consider local laws and regulations.

Inclusion

We’re committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels they belong and can thrive. We know the best ideas come when we bring different voices to the table, so we're building a team as dynamic as the diners and restaurants we serve—and fostering a culture where everyone feels welcome to be themselves.

If you need accommodations during the application or interview process, or on the job, we’re here to support you. Please reach out to your recruiter to request any accommodations.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
