Who we are:

The Trade Desk is a global technology company with a mission to create a better, more open internet for everyone through principled, intelligent advertising. Handling over 1 trillion queries per day, our platform operates at an unprecedented scale. We have also built something even stronger and more valuable: an award-winning culture based on trust, ownership, empathy, and collaboration. We value the unique experiences and perspectives that each person brings to The Trade Desk, and we are committed to fostering inclusive spaces where everyone can bring their authentic selves to work every day.

Do you have a passion for solving hard problems at scale? Are you eager to join a dynamic, globally- connected team where your contributions will make a meaningful difference in building a better media ecosystem? Come and see why Fortune magazine consistently ranks The Trade Desk among the best small- to medium-sized workplaces globally.

What we do:

At The Trade Desk, we believe in building the platform with a focus on quality at scale. This means whether we are building parts of our client-facing applications, distributed backend services, or model pipelines for bidding optimizations, we are making sure that we have infrastructure, development, and tools to do it right and efficiently. Our system performs all day, every day serving global traffic. We built a distributed system in a highly collaborative environment, utilizing a broad range of technologies. Our back-end developers work on finding solutions to algorithmic, optimization and scale challenges in everything we do. We are a global team with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. To complement this team, you will welcome ideas that are different from your own and be well-versed in building from common ground to value, seek out, and foster invisible and visible dimensions of diversity.

What you will do:

Our Senior Software Engineers are end-to-end owners who have the opportunity to participate in many aspects of designing, building, and delivering data-focused products for our stakeholders.

Some of the work that you will be doing to help us deliver on our mission is:

  • You will be part of the team responsible for building the Experimentation platform (A/B testing) for the company.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather experimentation requirements and develop scalable solutions iteratively.
  • Lead the design for the Experimentation Platform including the integrations with various business-critical applications.
  • Develop and operate high scale data products with a focus on trustworthiness of analyzed data, and de-buggability/actionability for feature teams and platform reliability
  • Engineer sophisticated data pipelines using Airflow, and Databricks, with focus on performance, costs and data integrity.
  • Drive the development of advanced statistical techniques to reduce the experiment cycle times and maintain trust in experiment data.
  • Drive complex changes involving multiple components and complex systems run by other software engineers
  • We are a global team with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
  • To complement this team, you will welcome ideas that are different from your own and be well-versed in building from common ground to value, seek out, and foster invisible and visible
    dimensions of diversity.

Who you are:

Our culture is much deeper than just having fun together (though we do that well, too). We take pride in our engineers being trust-builders, generous givers, scrappy problem solvers, and gritty pursuers of excellence. We're open to Senior and Staff level software engineers for this role. You do not have to meet all the requirements below, but we believe that people who meet most of them will have a higher likelihood of succeeding in this role:

  • You have 7+ years of software development engineering experience.
  • Proficiency with a modern language such as C# or Java or Golang or Python
  • You have a Bachelor’s/Master’s level degree in computer science or relevant engineering-related field or equivalent experience. Not everyone has the same level of access to opportunities. What is most important to us is what and how you can contribute, which is why our consideration is not limited by the level of education you have.
  • You have experience in leading and completing projects with a high degree of technical ambiguity.
  • You will work with petabyte-scale data challenges, large-scale distributed systems coordinating thousands of servers in cloud and physical data centers around the world, machine learning, and advanced visualizations – to name a few.
  • You will work with data processing pipelines, ML pipelines, data governance, data visualization, data quality, data privacy, data warehousing.
  • You have additional nice-to-have experience in the following areas:
    • Understanding of the basics of A/B testing, experimentation, feature rollout, and dynamic configuration.
    • Experience building or using A/B testing platforms as well as building analytics tools or data products.
    • Advise data scientists, product managers and engineers across the company on experimental design and adoption of experimentation platform.

A variety of technical opportunities is one of the best things about working at The Trade Desk as a software engineer, which is why we do not expect you to know every technology we use when you start. What we care about is that you can learn quickly and find solutions to complex problems using the optimum tools for the job. What you know is less important than how well you learn and innovate. We are not seeking engineers who know all the answers; we need engineers who can invent answers no one has thought of yet and find answers to the questions yet to be asked.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
