Turning Space into a Transportation Layer for Earth

Who We Are:

Eras of humanity can often be defined by a dominant transportation mode - horse drawn chariots, ocean going boats, or aircraft. These were spurred by a small group of people rigorously focused on building technology to achieve faster access to more of the world.  We seek to usher in a new era of humanity defined by universal access to the whole globe free of borders and the presence of a routine way from space to Earth. To do this, we are building highly maneuverable re-entry vehicles that can loiter in orbit before precision landing back on Earth.

What You’ll Do:

As a Senior Software Engineer (DevOps) at Inversion, you will have an instrumental impact on the functionality and performance of our next-generation reentry vehicles. You will own key internal software development workflows and assist with the development and deployment of internal tools and critical services. Your impact will also include the selection, definition, creation, configuration, administration, and training of the DevOps processes involving multiple teams. The result of this essential flow will be the demonstration of flight software applications: executing on the world’s first reentry vehicle designed for turning space into a transportation layer for Earth. You will be a key member of the Processing Core team, reporting directly to the Director of Engineering, Processing Core

Key Responsibilities

This role is all-encompassing, and includes the complete lifecycle of the vehicle’s software including:

  • Develop and own the group’s DevOps procedures
  • Construct CI/CD pipeline(s)
  • Assist with automation of developer workflows
  • Assist in integrating tests, including HIL (hardware in the loop) and HOOTL/SIL (software in the loop) testing, integration testing, and unit testing
  • Assist with the growth and development of the software organization, including conducting interviews and mentoring/onboarding other engineers and interns

Required Qualifications:

  • 5 -12 years of professional DevOps experience
  • Strong scripting and tooling skills: Python, Bash, etc.
  • Experience with common DevOps tools such as Ansible, Terraform/Open Tofu, AWS, etc.
  • Direct experience standing up new CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Git, Gitlab, Bamboo, Jenkins, etc.
  • Familiarity working in a Linux environment
  • Willing to learn new skills and step outside your job’s role and your comfort zone
  • Position may require occasional extended work hours and/or weekend work
  • Our office headquarters is located in Playa Vista, CA, and this position requires you to work onsite

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity deploying to both local and cloud environments with compliance requirements
  • Experience with virtualization technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, or virtual machines (Proxmox, VMWare ESXI, Xen Server, etc.)
  • Experience working with Bazel, CMake, or similar. Extra points if you have experience with systems programming languages (C/C++, Rust, etc) and compilers
  • Prior experience working in startups and small independent teams

Our office headquarters is located in Playa Vista, CA. This position requires in office presence.

The California annual base salary for this role is currently $140,000 - $165,000.  Pay Grades are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data.  Individual pay will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: interviews and an assessment of several factors that are unique to each candidate, job-related skills, relevant education and experience, certifications, abilities of the candidate and internal equity.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
