Senior Software Engineer, Core Services

We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer, Core Services, to contribute to building foundational services that will shape our engineering platform. This is a hands-on role for an engineer who wants to develop and deliver core platform capabilities that accelerate product development across the organization.

What you’ll do:

  • Enabling Developer Independence: Contribute to building frameworks and shared services that empower product teams to independently create, deploy, and operate new microservices. Your work will directly support the adoption of these patterns, reducing duplicated effort and inconsistencies.
  • Improving Development & Deployment Speed: Implement reusable services and tooling that help teams test, deploy, and iterate quickly. Your contributions will be measured by improvements in deployment frequency and a reduction in lead time for changes and troubleshooting time.
  • Accelerating AI-Driven Solutions: Collaborate with senior engineers to implement opportunities to leverage AI for internal workflows and development processes. You will help research, recommend, and integrate AI solutions for things like intelligent automation and development team assistance.
  • Project Execution: Implement well-defined project plans and deliver high-quality, maintainable code.
  • Engineering Mentorship: You'll mentor junior engineers and help uphold the team's technical standards.
  • Technical Implementation: Design and build maintainable, scalable services and APIs. Our stack includes Python, Django, MySQL, React, and TypeScript, but we welcome strong engineers from other backgrounds who can learn quickly.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Work with team leads, product managers, and other engineers to ensure solutions are practical and aligned with product goals

Who you are:

  • Systems Implementation: Experience implementing distributed systems, APIs, or microservices that are scalable and resilient.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and solve well-defined problems within the team's scope.
  • Technical Skills: Strong command of a modern backend language and the ability to apply testing, monitoring, and secure coding practices.
  • Collaboration: The ability to work effectively within a team and with cross-functional partners to deliver shared solutions.

Benefits:

  • We’re a remote-first company
  • Health insurance plans through Aetna (medical and dental) and MetLife (vision), including FSA and HSA plans
  • 401K plan (ADP)
  • Monthly therapy and wellness stipends
  • Monthly co-working space membership stipend
  • Monthly work-from-home stipend
  • Financial wellness benefits through Northstar
  • Pet discount program through United Pet Care
  • Financial perks and rewards through BenefitHub
  • EAP access through Aetna
  • One-time home office stipend to set up your home office
  • Comprehensive parental leave plans
  • 12 paid holidays and 1 Alma Give Back Day
  • Flexible PTO

Salary Band: $150,000 - $175,000

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
