Founded in 2005, Box is headquartered in Redwood City, CA, and we have offices across the United States, Europe, and Asia.

WHY BOX NEEDS YOU

We are building the next-generation foundations for modern cloud operations including and not limited to AIOps. This is not a traditional Cloud Ops role—we are reimagining how cloud reliability, observability, incident detection, and response can be built with automation, intelligence, and software-first thinking at the core.

We're looking for a high-impact Senior Software Engineer to join us in laying this foundation. You’ll work across observability, incident response, automation platforms, and AI/ML-driven decision systems. You will own end-to-end design and delivery of critical systems, mentor other engineers, and challenge legacy assumptions with thoughtful, data-informed opinions.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • You will design and build foundational systems required to transform and shift left our cloud operations north star including incident response, AIops
  • You will drive the platformization of cloud ops tools—move away from manual dashboards to APIs and intelligent workflows.
  • You will build scalable, resilient microservices and systems that integrate with observability platforms, incident tooling, and ML/AI models.
  • You will collaborate with SREs, product engineers, and platform teams to design interfaces and event-driven workflows.
  • You will prototype and integrate with LLMs for postmortem generation, incident summarization, and proactive anomaly detection.
  • You will influence infrastructure decisions, drive design reviews, and raise the bar for engineering in the reliability space.
  • You will help mentor and level-up the team by bringing a strong engineering culture and system design thinking.
  • Participate in our on-call rotation, and be available during on-call shifts to respond to and triage any issues that arise.

WHO YOU ARE

Required skills

  • 9+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of building backend systems, platforms, or dev tools—not just writing scripts.
  • You have strong fundamentals in distributed systems, systems design, APIs, and automation.
  • You have experience with at least one of: Go, Python,  or Java.
  • You have experience working with observability stacks (e.g., Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Grafana, Datadog, Honeycomb, or GCP’s Ops suite).
  • You are familiarity with event-driven architecture, pub/sub, and incident modeling (bonus: Rootly, PagerDuty, Opsgenie, or similar).
  • You are comfortable integrating with LLMs or embedding-based systems—or eager to learn quickly.
  • You have a bias for action, deep curiosity, and willingness to challenge the status quo—you're not afraid to ask "why do we even need this?"
  • You have strong written and verbal communication; ability to articulate trade-offs clearly.
  • Preferred skills
  • Familiarity with either Java/Scala or PHP/JavaScript/NodeJS a bonus
  • Team-centric mindset - demonstrated ability working well in a collaborative environment
  • Familiarity with AIOps (Artificial Intelligence for Cloud Operations) and the ability to integrate AI/ML models for smarter, more automated operations.
  • We are an AI-first company. This means you approach your work with a growth mindset and find ways to leverage AI to help make faster, smarter decisions that will 10X your impact at Box.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
