We believe that investing in world-class technology will facilitate a new class of insurance products, driving a massive positive impact on the hundreds of millions of drivers who carry auto insurance in the US. Root's Engineering team is committed to building a flexible platform on which our product designers and quantitative scientists can quickly test ideas, deploy them into production, and iterate, with the ultimate objective of a delightful customer experience coupled with effective risk management.

The Opportunity

AI Platform is Root’s team for building the infrastructure, tooling, and operating patterns that make AI capabilities reliable, secure, and usable across Root’s products and operations. As a Senior Software Engineer on AI Platform, you will independently own hard engineering problems, turn early demand into durable platform primitives, and help define the patterns that make responsible AI part of everyday work.

Salary Range: $154,200 - $210,000 (Eligible for competitive bonus and equity offering)
Root is a "work where it works best" company. This means we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Make safe, reliable AI use the easy path for Root teams by building the services, developer tools, and deployment patterns they can depend on.
  • Turn early demand and complex engineering problems into reusable platform capabilities, from AWS infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code to AI system operations.
  • Give teams confidence to ship by building in security, observability, reliability, and cost awareness from the start.
  • Reduce the friction between a promising AI idea and a production-ready capability through self-service tools and thoughtful developer experience.
  • Work alongside product engineering, data, security, and platform partners to turn their highest-leverage needs into shared solutions.
  • Help establish the technical standards, documentation, and design practices that make responsible AI development repeatable at Root.

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • 4+ years as a software engineer
  • Demonstrated ability to independently deliver complex software or infrastructure work with high quality.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, and infrastructure-as-code such as Terraform.
  • Strong DevOps practices, including automation, observability, incident response, and secure delivery.
  • Familiarity with AI/LLM application patterns and the judgment to use them responsibly.
  • A platform-as-a-product mindset and ability to work across systems within a domain.
  • Clear communication and effective collaboration with engineers and immediate cross-functional partners.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
