Our five Behaviors-Traveler First, Think Big, Operate with Excellence, Ownership Mindset, and Succeed Together-help foster a supportive environment where people can grow their careers and have the flexibility, benefits, and support to do their best work. Join us and build for travelers everywhere.

Introduction to the Team:

Expedia Technology teams partner with our Product teams to create innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.

The Loyalty Engineering organization powers continuous engagement, re-engagement, and (re)acquisition for travelers worldwide. We build the systems that create a durable growth flywheel for Expedia, deepening traveler relationships while driving measurable business impact across brands and markets.

In this role, you will contribute to the technical strategy and architecture for the AI empowered Loyalty charter, developing and delivering next generation, intelligent engagement experiences powered by modern AI and agentic systems. You will contribute to system design across multiple distributed engineering teams, partnering closely with Product, Data Science, and platform leaders to build scalable, reliable, and innovative solutions.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, build, and evolve client facing experiences and full stack services for global loyalty products, ensuring high availability, scalability, and performance across multiple customer and partner touchpoints.

  • Own the design and evolution of embeddable placements that other internal teams integrate into their own surfaces, including versioning, backward compatibility, and safe staged rollout across a wide range of host environments.

  • Lead end to end system design across the full stack, from low level design and API design to data modeling, with particular depth on browser side architecture such as cross domain communication, sandboxing, script size and performance budgets, and privacy and consent constraints.

  • Drive technical strategy negotiating clear technical contracts, ownership boundaries, and integration points in situations where the team does not have direct authority over the placement.

  • Own complex full stack features from technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and operational support, with a front end leaning bias while remaining equally comfortable owning backend services and data models when needed.

  • Collaborate with product, design, partner engineering teams, and platform leaders to translate loyalty product requirements into technical solutions that work within the real constraints of third party or partner owned placements, making pragmatic trade offs using data and customer impact.

  • Safely integrate and operate AI and ML enabled personalization, experimentation, or optimization capabilities within client side surfaces, accounting for the added complexity of operating inside surfaces the team does not fully control.

  • Mentor engineers and set technical direction for this class of embedded, cross team, and partner surface problems, contributing patterns, tooling, and best practices that make these challenges easier to solve consistently across the loyalty ecosystem.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent related professional experience.

  • 8+ years of relevant professional experience.

  • Professional software development experience building and operating full stack services, including hands on work with RESTful APIs, data models, and web applications.

  • Proven experience owning design and implementation for services or features within a multi service or domain environment, including accountability for quality, reliability, and operational readiness.

  • Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language and associated frameworks, with the ability to design, review, and debug complex, distributed systems.

  • Familiarity with AI driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building and shipping client-side SDKs, tags, or embeddable widgets that run inside surfaces or applications owned by other teams or external partners, such as ad serving, tag management, analytics, or personalization SDKs.

  • Strong front end engineering depth in React and TypeScript, including performance optimization for latency sensitive, high traffic consumer surfaces, paired with working proficiency in backend services using Java or Node in cloud native environments.

  • Experience negotiating technical integration contracts with partner or platform teams who own the surface or placement, including defining clear ownership boundaries, service levels, and fallback behavior when a partner surface changes unexpectedly.

  • Familiarity with ad tech concepts, user targeting, and experimentation, with the ability to apply that experience to loyalty and personalization use cases.

  • Hands on experience integrating and operating AI or ML enabled capabilities in production, including use of developer AI tools such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor to improve productivity, code quality, personalization, and automation outcomes.

The total cash range for this position in San Jose is $199,000.00 to $278,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $318,500.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
