K2 Space is building large, high-powered spacecraft for the next generation of space development. Backed by Lightspeed Venture Partners, Altimeter Capital, and many others ($200M raised to date), we intend to mass produce the highest-powered satellite platforms ever built for missions across LEO to Deep Space.

The rise of launch vehicles like Falcon 9 and Starship enables the move from an era of mass constraint to one of mass abundance. We believe this new era requires spacecraft with a fundamentally different design in order to fully utilize the massive rockets coming to market.

We’re a team that believes the future lies in building large, high-powered satellites that can handle multiple orbits. This is a necessity if we ever want to develop the solar system, and become a Kardashev Type II (K2) civilization.

If you are a motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and you're excited about contributing to the success of a groundbreaking Series B space startup, we’d love for you to apply.

The Role

You will be responsible for the core infrastructure and tooling used by the software team and larger Engineering org as we build and fly some of the largest spacecraft that have ever been flown. You will create solutions that affect how we write, build, and test code for all aspects of vehicle software and many aspects of non-vehicle software. In your first six months, you will directly shape the software solutions of our first Mega class satellite. In your first year, your work will allow the team to get that satellite built and ready to fly. In your first two years, you will enable multiple satellites to be built, flown, and operated. This role requires in person presence at our headquarters in Torrance, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and maintain both Cloud and On-Premise infrastructure using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC)
  • Manage the full lifecycle of Kubernetes clusters and Docker container deployments, from design to decommissioning
  • Streamline software engineering workflows and own core CI/CD infrastructure components including GitLab, Bazel, and Remote Build Execution
  • Collaborate closely with software engineering teams to enable reliable, scalable, and efficient solutions
  • Build and maintain technical infrastructure for monitoring and maintaining multiple satellites
  • Partner with IT to design controls, uphold security standards, and proactively mitigate vulnerabilities

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a STEM discipline or 3+ years of professional experience in Software Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, or DevOps
  • 5+ years of experience with building and maintaining on-premise and cloud infrastructure, build systems, CI/CD platforms, and source control systems

Nice to Have

  • Expertise with Linux systems
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code processes, such as Terraform or Ansible
  • Experience with GitLab
  • Experience with managing software deployments
  • Experience with Bazel
  • Experience with FPGA development workflows
  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing environments

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Base salary range for this role is $140,000 - $180,000 + equity in the company
  • Salary will be based on several factors including, but not limited to: knowledge and skills, education, and experience level
  • Comprehensive benefits package including unlimited paid time off, medical/dental/vision/ coverage, life insurance, paid parental leave, and many other perks

If you don’t meet 100% of the preferred skills and experience, we encourage you to still apply! Building a spacecraft unlike any other requires a team unlike any other and non-traditional career twists and turns are encouraged!

If you need a reasonable accommodation as part of your application for employment or interviews with us, please let us know.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
