We're Growing Fast — And We’re building our team to scale

Nest Veterinary is on track to 5X this year. We're the category leader in care plan infrastructure for veterinary practices, and we're building the team that will take us to the next level. If you thrive in fast-moving environments, care deeply about system design, and want your code to solve real-world problems — this is your role.

About Nest Veterinary

Our mission is simple: make pet care accessible to every pet parent. We provide fully-managed, tech-enabled care plan solutions that help veterinary practices increase compliance, drive revenue, and deliver better preventive care — without the administrative burden.

We're transforming an industry, and we're doing it with a modern Python stack and a team that genuinely cares about the impact of their work.

The Role

As a Senior Python Engineer, you’ll be a foundational member of a small, elite engineering team (<10) shipping daily. You will help drive the architectural maturity of our platform as we scale, ensuring our systems remain as elegant and durable as they are fast.

This isn't an "implement tickets" role — it's a high-agency position for someone who wants to own the architecture, identify weak abstractions before they ossify, and build the financial and operational engine that allows vets to focus on medicine rather than logic.

What You'll Own
  • Architectural Evolution: You’ll design and build scalable backend services using Python 3.12+, FastAPI, and gRPC on GCP.

  • System Integrity & Security: Operate within a SOC 2 Type II environment. You’ll develop complex payment flows via Stripe and handle sensitive PII with a HIPAA-aware posture, ensuring our infrastructure is as reliable as it is fast.

  • Engineering Excellence: Raise the bar for code quality and documentation. You’ll provide high-leverage code reviews and help establish the standards that allow us to scale efficiently and effectively as our load increases.

  • Modern Workflow: Leverage tools like Terraform, Cloud Run, and Google Spanner to maintain high availability. You’ll use AI tools (Claude, Copilot) intelligently to accelerate development—using them as leverage for research and scaffolding without outsourcing your own judgment.

What We're Looking For
  • 7+ years building backend systems in production with deep Python expertise.

  • Prior startup experience required — you know how to build in fast-moving environments and recognize when to favor "speed to market" vs. "architectural perfection."

  • Proven architectural judgment — you’ve handled APIs, distributed transactional systems, and cloud-native infrastructure (GCP preferred).

  • Security-minded — you have experience handling sensitive data (PII, payments, or healthcare-adjacent).

  • A builder's mindset — you write code that others can read six months later and you aren't afraid to refactor legacy paths into durable services.

  • High ownership, Team mentality — you understand what you ship, you value "strong opinions, loosely held," and you thrive in a collaborative team environment.

Why Nest
  • 5X growth trajectory — your impact on our core systems will be visible and immediate.

  • Direct access to leadership — work in a flat organization where your technical insights drive product decisions.

  • Daily shipping velocity — a "test-heavy" culture and robust CI/CD (GitHub Actions/Cloud Deploy) means you see your work in production every day.

  • Mission that matters — more pets getting the preventive care they need because of the durable infrastructure you build.

  • Teammates who show up — kind, motivated, and genuinely collaborative

Nest is an equal-opportunity employer. You are welcome at Nest for who you are, no matter where you come from or what you look like. Our platform is for everyone, and so is our workplace. Bring us your personal experience, your perspectives, and your background. It's in our differences that we will find the power to keep revolutionizing veterinary health care and help pets live longer, healthier, and happier lives.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
