About Freestar

Freestar engineers cutting-edge monetization solutions for the world's best websites. By combining industry-leading technology, data-driven insights, and massive scale, we empower busy publishers to maximize their revenue while freeing themselves from the complexities of ad operations. This allows our partners to focus on what they do best: creating great content.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a seasoned expert in the digital advertising ecosystem to join our Publisher Support Engineering team. This is not a typical support role; it's a high-impact, technical position for someone who lives and breathes programmatic advertising.

The ideal candidate is a master of troubleshooting and optimizing a publisher’s wrapper implementation. You understand the intricacies of header bidding, auction dynamics, and the publisher-side ad tech landscape. Naturally curious, you are a lifelong learner who thrives on tackling unique challenges and finding elegant solutions where others see roadblocks.

What You'll Do

Reporting to the Associate Director of Publisher Support Engineering, you will serve as the technical authority for our publisher partners, ensuring their ad implementations are flawlessly executed, highly performant, and maximally profitable.

  • Serve as the primary escalation point for diagnosing and resolving complex ad implementation issues, from subtle rendering discrepancies to core revenue-impacting problems.
  • Architect and implement custom JavaScript and CSS solutions to optimize ad layouts, improve viewability, and enhance user experience without compromising site performance (Core Web Vitals).
  • Own the technical lifecycle of publisher onboarding and complex integration projects, ensuring flawless execution, rigorous QA, and rapid time-to-revenue.
  • Act as a technical subject matter expert (SME), partnering directly with publishers and internal teams (Customer Success, Yield, Product, Engineering) to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable solutions.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Core Ad Technology Expertise:

  • Deep, hands-on expertise with header bidding, specifically with Prebid.js and GPT.js. You can confidently debug bid requests/responses, resolve layout issues, troubleshoot timeouts, and understand wrapper architecture.
  • Mastery of Google Ad Manager (GAM), including advanced targeting with key-values, delivery troubleshooting, unified pricing rules, and flooring.
  • Holistic understanding of the programmatic ecosystem, including the roles of SSPs, DSPs, and the mechanics of the ad auction from impression to render.
  • Proven ability to debug live ad environments using a full suite of tools, including Chrome Developer Tools (Network/Console), ad debugging extensions.

Additional Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of experience in a technical ad operations or solutions engineering role.
  • Strong proficiency in frontend web technologies, including vanilla JavaScript and HTML/CSS. A solid understanding of how ads interact with SPA frameworks (like React) is essential.
  • A relentless problem-solver with a deep sense of curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning in a fast-evolving industry.
  • 2+ years of experience querying and analyzing data using SQL.
  • A strategic mindset with a firm grasp of the supply-side business, balancing revenue optimization and user experience.
  • Exceptional communication and consultative skills; you can confidently lead technical calls with clients and collaborate effectively with non-technical internal teams.
What you can expect in return:
  • Full-Time, Salaried Position
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits
  • 401K with company match, vested immediately
  • The opportunity to be part of something BIG

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
