🎯 Our Mission

At Pulley, we are on a mission to help construction teams break ground faster. The United States is short between 4-7 million homes while housing production and affordability remain near historic lows. Meanwhile, retail and office real estate are still adapting to the post-pandemic world and the AI boom has led to significant investments in data center infrastructure.

Permitting requirements vary vastly by jurisdiction, making it challenging to navigate for home builders, retailers, architects and contractors. It creates a critical bottleneck that every project must traverse. While the industry remains largely fragmented and underserved, we believe that combining cutting-edge software with permitting expertise can condense permitting timelines from months to days or even hours!

🏗️ About Us

We are a passionate team building software for the built environment around us. Founded by Charlie Jacobson and Andreas Rotenberg in 2021, our team combines deep experience in real estate and construction with a track record of shipping software loved by millions of customers.

We’re backed by CRV, Susa Ventures, BoxGroup, Fifth Wall, Operator, South Park Commons, Suffolk Construction and leaders from Plaid, Segment, Procore, ServiceTitan, Built, BuildZoom, and eero.

🏠 What We’re Building

We’re building the world’s first software platform for construction permitting — for any project, in any city. Our north star is speed; everything we do is in the service of helping our customers get their permits as fast as possible.

We serve some of the top developers, builders, retailers and architects in the industry to permit new apartment buildings, office space, homes, stores and much more!

This role is based in our San Francisco, CA office, reporting to our CEO, Charlie Jacobson, and collaborating with our collocated design and engineering team of 10+ people.

Who you are
  • You're a product designer who cares deeply about designing the right thing before designing the thing right

  • Driven by curiosity, you find yourself obsessing over problems that "feel weird, but I don't know why yet"

  • Craft matters to you, the job isn’t done until it meets your bar

  • There is a method to your madness — you use principles and frameworks to solve problems of varying scale, knowing there's no single right approach (but there are wrong ones)

  • Excited about designing for work – at this point everyone uses software to do their jobs, you’re energized by making complex domains simple to work in

  • You are energized by working for startups. Translation: fast paced, async collaboration via Slack, can create something from nothing, act as an owner, and hold strong opinions loosely

What you'll do
  • Design and effectively communicate compelling user flows and specifications for stakeholders and engineers

  • Lead projects from concept to a successful launch, ensuring a high bar of execution

  • Interface directly with customers to collect feedback on new and existing functionality

  • Advocate for the user by partnering with product and engineering on product definition and roadmap

  • Explore leveraging AI to synthesize the complex and diverse world of permitting requirements at scale

  • Contribute to the design system and product design lifecycle at Pulley

Qualifications
  • 6+ years experience designing enterprise or B2B products or services

  • Expert with Figma designs and prototypes

  • Portfolio demonstrates strong interaction design thinking for complex workflows

  • Experience defining product requirements, translating user problems into clear solutions

  • Comfortable moderating evaluative and generative user interviews with external customers

  • Successfully shipped web based products and features collaborating closely with engineering

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
