Senior Product Designer, Insurance

Alma is seeking a mission-driven Senior Product Designer to join our insurance team. In this role, you will craft intuitive tools that help mental health providers navigate insurance eligibility and claims processing with ease, while also building supportive experiences for our internal teams and the clients they serve. The ideal candidate thrives in complex problem spaces, adapts quickly to new challenges, and values deep collaboration across disciplines.

What you’ll do:

  • Partner closely with Product Managers, Engineering Managers, and our Lead Product Designer across multiple squads to iteratively solve challenging problems in the insurance space.
  • Lead the design of scalable, intuitive user experiences across devices that make it easier for providers to submit and track claims, and for clients to better understand their coverage.
  • Apply service design and systems thinking to create higher-impact, cost-saving workflows that improve how Alma processes claims and how internal teams operate.
  • Understand and advocate for user needs by driving research activities, including interviews, surveys, and usability testing.
  • Share ideas early and often through sketches, wireframes, prototypes, and design reviews to foster alignment and collaboration.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally and across teams, such as Ops, Product Marketing and Analytics, in a highly agile, iterative environment to deliver efficient and valuable solutions.
  • Contribute to Alma’s design system and best practices, helping elevate product design as a function within the company.

Who you are:

  • You have 5+ years of experience in product design or user experience design, ideally within healthcare, fintech, or another highly complex domain
  • You have a portfolio with case studies that showcase a deep understanding of user needs, your ability to translate complex systems into seamless experiences, and your creative problem-solving chops.
  • You are a curious, ambitious, empathetic, and strategic designer who thrives in complexity and brings clarity to ambiguous problem spaces
  • You are fluent in digital design and prototyping tools, especially Figma, and can confidently communicate ideas through flows, wireframes, and prototypes
  • You are comfortable working in a fast-paced, metrics-driven environment, making decisions with imperfect information, and adapting and iterating quickly.
  • You can context switch effectively, collaborating across multiple squads, stakeholders, and domains, and you enjoy building relationships to move work forward.
  • You are passionate about user research, from moderating interviews to synthesizing insights, and you advocate for accessibility and usability in every solution.
  • You are motivated by Alma’s mission and excited to help improve how mental health care is delivered and experienced.

Benefits:

  • We’re a remote-first company
  • Health insurance plans through Aetna (medical and dental) and MetLife (vision), including FSA and HSA plans
  • 401K plan (ADP)
  • Monthly therapy and wellness stipends
  • Monthly co-working space membership stipend
  • Monthly work-from-home stipend
  • Financial wellness benefits through Northstar
  • Pet discount program through United Pet Care

  • Comprehensive parental leave plans
  • 12 paid holidays, and 1 Alma Volunteering Day
  • 3 weeks of PTO, plus 7 sick days to recharge

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
