Fully Remote Position
Senior Principal EngineerAbout DecisivDecisiv builds the service relationship management (SRM) platform behind the white-labeled service programs of North America's leading truck manufacturers. OEMs, dealers, fleets, and service providers use SRM to manage service and repair events for commercial vehicles, and Decisiv sits between them as the integration and orchestration layer.
About the roleSenior Principal Engineer is a senior individual contributor level position in Decisiv engineering. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will take technical leadership of the strategic projects the CTO assigns and own them from technical design through delivery.
This is a technical leadership role built for speed and range. You will be the engineer we put on the problems that matter most, moving across teams, systems, and business units to get complex projects from idea to production. One week that means writing the code on the hardest part of a system. The next, it means aligning engineers, products, and partners around a plan and driving it to done. You keep the bar high on reliability and security at any pace. This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports.
Who you will work withYou will work closely with the Chief Architect, engineering and product directors, and other senior technical staff to shape and deliver your projects. You will also work directly with company executives and with customers, representing the technical side of the work in planning, reviews, and key conversations.
ResponsibilitiesSenior Principal Engineers carry every responsibility of a Principal Engineer, expanded from team and domain scope to company scope, and pointed at the projects that matter most to the business.
Lead the company's most important projects- Serve as technical lead on strategic projects assigned by the CTO, accountable for technical design, delivery plan, and outcomes across every team involved.
- Move quickly across unfamiliar systems, teams, and business units, writing code on the hardest parts and driving the work from idea to production.
- Coordinate engineers across multiple teams to deliver a single outcome, unblocking dependencies and making the technical calls that keep work moving.
- Report status, risks, and tradeoffs to the CTO clearly and early.
- Architect scalable, data-driven systems for your projects, designing services that process large volumes of structured and unstructured data with high performance.
- Plan improvements on a 12+ month horizon, so the systems your projects touch stay adaptable as business and technology demands change.
- Drive interoperability through modular design, reusable components, and clean integrations between internal and external systems.
- Introduce new technology, including agentic development practices, where it creates real value, without trading away reliability or maintainability.
- Solve the hardest technical challenges across the company, including system performance, data pipelines, event-driven architectures, and distributed services.
- Own the major technical decisions on your projects, and work with the Chief Architect, engineering and product leaders, and other senior technical staff when a decision reaches beyond them.
- Raise the bar on engineering standards in practice, applying them on company-level projects and bringing what you learn back to the architecture team.
- Serve as the senior escalation point for the company's most critical incidents, performance bottlenecks, and technical tradeoffs.
- Act as the senior technical counterpart to enterprise customers, OEM partners, and internal stakeholders on integrations, interoperability, and platform capabilities.
- Lead cross-organization technical discussions that resolve dependencies, remove blockers, and align priorities across engineering, product, and business units.
- Mentor Principal Engineers, Staff Engineers, and tech leads, helping them scale their impact and grow into company-level technical leaders.
- 15 or more years of software engineering experience, including at least 5 years at principal level or equivalent leading complex, cross-team technical initiatives through to delivery.
- Deep expertise in Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, and API design with OpenAPI, building scalable web applications and backend services.
- Proven experience designing distributed systems, including event-driven architectures, messaging systems, and data pipelines, on cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred).
- A track record of designing and evolving public or partner-facing APIs and integration platforms used by external customers at scale.
- Native agentic coding experience: you build primarily with tools such as Claude Code, direct and review agent output with confidence, and can show production work delivered this way.
- A track record of mentoring senior engineers and guiding technical direction across multiple teams.
- Strong judgment on security, reliability, and operability, including observability and incident learning.
- Clear, concise technical writing. Your design documents and decision records change what other teams do.
- Ability to influence executives, customers, partners, and engineers without direct authority, and to explain technical tradeoffs in business terms.
- Experience building standards, protocols, or versioned contracts adopted by third parties.
- Hands-on experience designing MCP servers, agent tooling, or LLM-powered systems in production.
- Background in B2B SaaS serving enterprise or OEM customers with complex integration needs.
- Familiarity with commercial vehicles, fleet operations, dealer service, warranty, or telematics. Industry experience is not required.
- First 90 days: You have shipped code in the core platform, learned SRM's architecture and the teams you will work with, and produced a delivery plan for your first assigned project.
- First 6 months: Your first project is delivering on its plan, with design decisions documented and risks surfaced early.
- First year: At least one strategic project has shipped to production with its target outcomes met, and the CTO trusts you to take on the next one.
Our process includes an architecture discussion on a real SRM integration problem, a live agentic build exercise, and a review of a design document or decision record you have written before. We use these to see how you think, build, and write.
