Senior Power BI Developer

At Proven, we use data to inform smart decisions and design better experiences—for our clients and for ourselves. We’re seeking a Senior Power BI Developer to join our growing team and help us unlock the power of data visualization, business intelligence, and reporting. This role will work closely with cross-functional teams to transform complex datasets into insightful, interactive dashboards that drive meaningful outcomes for mission-driven organizations.

We’re looking for someone who is confident in owning end-to-end Power BI development, from requirement gathering and data modeling to dashboard design and deployment. You’ll thrive here if you enjoy turning ambiguity into clarity, empowering others with self-service tools, and finding the most elegant way to tell a data story.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain Power BI dashboards and reports to meet business and client needs
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and clients to define KPIs, success metrics, and reporting requirements
  • Collaborate with developers and designers to support embedded Power BI reports within custom applications and align report UX with broader product experiences
  • Connect to a variety of data sources (SQL Server, Excel, APIs, etc.) and develop robust data models
  • Explore opportunities to extend Power BI capabilities through custom visuals or lightweight integrations when standard solutions fall short
  • Build and optimize DAX queries for performance and usability
  • Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and consistency across reporting assets
  • Translate complex data into clear visualizations and narratives for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Provide technical guidance on Power BI governance, security, and best practices
  • Document data flows, models, and dashboard logic for transparency and scalability
  • Train internal teams and clients on using Power BI reports and capabilities
  • Stay current with Power BI features and trends, recommending improvements to existing tools and approaches
Core Competencies
  • Expertise in Power BI desktop and service, including DAX, Power Query (M), and data modeling
  • Strong knowledge of relational databases, data warehouses, and writing complex SQL queries
  • Ability to interpret ambiguous requirements and turn them into structured, efficient dashboards
  • A deep understanding of data visualization best practices, usability principles, and storytelling with data
  • Awareness of Power BI embedding techniques and ability to work alongside web development teams to deliver integrated analytics experiences
  • Interest in or experience with customizing Power BI visuals to enhance interactivity, accessibility, or alignment with design systems
  • Detail-oriented and committed to accuracy and quality in all deliverables
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, especially with non-technical audiences
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills in a fast-paced, remote environment
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in BI development, with at least 3 years working with Power BI
  • Proven experience delivering impactful dashboards and reports in a client-facing or stakeholder-facing setting
  • Familiarity with Azure, Microsoft Fabric, Power Automate, or other components of the Power Platform is a plus
  • Experience in data transformation, ETL, or integrating data across multiple sources
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or related field preferred
  • Microsoft Power BI certification is a plus

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
