The Opportunity

We're seeking a Senior Platform Engineer who's excited to help evolve and scale our AWS-based platform. You'll collaborate closely with both Platform and Product Engineering teams to refine our cloud infrastructure, ensure we align with the AWS Well-Architected Framework, and champion best-in-class DevOps practices across the organization. You will play a key role in shaping how we adopt and integrate new tools—like Spacelift—to further automate and streamline our operations.

You'll have substantial influence on the strategic direction of our platform and an opportunity to amplify the impact of every engineering team. Working from our existing foundation, you'll help us achieve the next level of scalability without compromising our ability to move quickly and innovate. If you're looking for a role where your voice will guide major architectural decisions, and where you can mentor others and drive meaningful change, this is the place to make it happen.

Root is a “work where it works best” company. This means we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US.

Salary Range: $133,784 - $155,000 (Bonus and LTI Eligible)

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Design, build, and manage cloud infrastructure in AWS

  • Develop and manage self-service capabilities for engineering teams

  • Educate and coach platform and product engineers on cloud infrastructure best practices

  • Actively seek to understand our stakeholder’s problems to ensure you are developing effective solutions

  • Collaborate closely with teammates to share and improve your work

  • Clearly communicate and document your work to help others learn

  • Support your systems in production, resolving incidents and issues that affect our customers and stakeholders

  • Increase the effectiveness of your team by suggesting code and process improvements

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • 4+ years as a software/cloud/devops engineer.

  • Expertise in Terraform and IAC best practices

  • Expertise in AWS Cloud Architecture and foundational AWS services (Networking, ECS, RDS, S3, IAM)

  • Proficiency with CI/CD pipelines and related concepts

  • Proficiency in Ruby or Python

  • Proven leadership of projects involving multiple teams across functional domains

  • Excellent communication skills both with engineering colleagues and senior business leaders

As part of Root's interview process, we kindly ask that all candidates be on camera for virtual interviews. This helps us create a more personal and engaging experience for both you and our interviewers. Being on camera is a standard requirement for our process and part of how we assess fit and communication style, so we do require it to move forward with any applicant's candidacy. If you have any concerns, feel free to let us know once you are contacted. We’re happy to talk it through.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
