As a Senior OSS Engineer, you'll maintain and develop the Storybook codebase, enhancing APIs, collaborating with teams, and creating detailed documentation while participating in the support rotation and possibly representing Storybook externally.
The summary above was generated by AI

Chromatic is a platform used by thousands of front-end teams worldwide, including BBC, Shopify, Adobe, and ourselves. Our mission is to safeguard all of the world's pixels, and Storybook plays a critical role: it’s how our work reaches the broadest developer audience and sets the standard for UI quality across the web.

We're seeking an engineer to join the Storybook maintainers team. Storybook is the industry-standard tool for building, testing, and documenting UI components. Our team covers a broad surface area, so your work will have an immediate, visible impact. You’ll work with a collaborative group that values kindness, empathy, and thoughtful communication. We care deeply about creating an environment where people can learn, grow, and feel supported in taking on new challenges. Momentum matters, but we also make space to think ideas through carefully to ensure we’re shipping the right things.

Over the past few years, we’ve been modernizing Storybook from the inside out. Some highlights from recent months include:

  • Launched Storybook Test as our big bet to enable a new component testing workflow with features like coverage and accessibility testing

  • Reduced significant bloat to improve performance and developer experience

  • Shipped ESM-only builds to align with the modern JavaScript ecosystem

As we grow Storybook’s capabilities and reach, we’re also growing the team to match that ambition. It’s an exciting moment to join and help shape what’s next!

This is a fully remote position with core hours within Central European Time (09:00–15:00 UTC overlap).

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the Storybook codebase as a core maintainer

  • Design, develop, and refine Storybook APIs that serve our end users, addon authors, and core maintainers (us!)

  • Drive implementation of Storybook features and growth experiments

  • Collaborate in the open by triaging issues, reviewing pull requests, supporting contributors, and writing or reviewing RFCs

  • Work with the DX team to create detailed documentation and help content for end users

  • Work with other engineering teams at Chromatic to ensure feature continuity between Chromatic and Storybook

  • Participate in the engineering team's support rotation, which is primarily within business hours

  • Optionally, you will have opportunities to represent Storybook externally through conference talks, blog posts, or other channels

What we’re looking for
  • 5+ years of experience building for the web using JavaScript/TypeScript or other relevant languages

  • Prior experience building or maintaining developer tools, frameworks, or libraries used by other developers

  • Solid understanding of how modern web frameworks and build tools (e.g. Next.js, Vite) work under the hood — you’ve built, debugged, or extended them to solve real-world problems

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; comfortable working asynchronously across a distributed team

  • Comfortable engaging in open, constructive discussions in a collaborative, engineering-led culture

  • Interest in learning how large open-source projects operate, from release cycles to community feedback, and in growing your impact over time

  • Genuine enthusiasm for making developers' lives easier and helping shape where frontend development is headed

We’d be extra excited if you…
  • Have shared knowledge publicly through conference talks, blog posts, or other channels

  • Have experience running growth experiments designed to increase adoption, retention, and expansion

  • Have deep expertise with React Native or a non-React framework

  • Have experience with Storybook or Chromatic

  • Have worked effectively in a distributed, remote-first team environment

  • Have followed a non-traditional path into software and bring insight from experiences beyond engineering

We understand that even the best candidates might not meet all the above qualifications on day one. That's okay. If you’re excited about Storybook’s mission and want to grow your skills, we’d love to hear from you.

Salary range: US $167,000 - $194,000 + equity. Learn more about our compensation philosophy here. Visit our careers page for a list of our other benefits and a peek into life at Chromatic.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
