JOB DESCRIPTION

TMZ is seeking a Sr. News Editor who is well-read with experience in journalism. This is a key role in the newsroom, serving as the final stop in the publishing process. The Sr. News Editor must be able to improve every aspect of a post, from style and tone to structure. The ideal candidate will have a rock-solid understanding of journalism standards, SEO best practices and a firm grasp of legal issues related to news publishing. The Sr. News Editor will enterprise stories, edit articles, and ensure all story assets reflect the tone and standards of the brand. Ultimately, this individual must be a champion of the brand’s voice, standards, and perspective. This position will oversee a team of writers, work closely with the News Director and report to the Executive Producers.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit all copy for grammar, spelling, style, tone, SEO best practices and publishing standards
  • Coach Writers and Researchers to produce best possible product
  • Partner with the News Director, Producers, Researchers, and Legal on publishing content
  • Provide valuable feedback across the brand as a key stakeholder in TMZ’s voice and style
  • Make real-time decisions in breaking news situations on the content we are producing
  • Assist in the training and onboarding of new Writers and Researchers

Requirements:

  • Extensive editing experience, newsroom experience is a plus
  • A knack for crafting well-told stories and knockout headlines in a conversational voice.
  • Able to mentor and coach writers at every level
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices
  • Deep understanding of journalistic ethics and best practices
  • Legal knowledge, pertaining to reporting and news publishing

Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay rate/range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on education, skills, experience, and location is $120,000.00-140,000.00 annually. This role is also eligible for various benefits, including medical/dental/vision, insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid time off, and other benefits in accordance with applicable plan documents. Benefits for Union represented employees will be in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
