About Us:

At Quartermaster AI, we believe the ocean should be a safe and sustainably managed resource for all. By leveraging cutting-edge AI and robotics, we unlock capabilities that were only recently impossible. Our distributed open-ocean systems enable every vessel to sense, compute, and communicate, enhancing maritime domain awareness for those who need it most.

Job Description:

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to design and release hardware for Quartermaster’s Smartmast systems and related marine products. This role focuses on marine electromechanical hardware for harsh outdoor environments, especially enclosures, mounting systems, cable integration, and production-ready design.

The right candidate has strong experience with marine electronics or comparable outdoor electromechanical systems and can work effectively on short R&D timelines while delivering hardware that is reliable, manufacturable, and ready to scale. This role is primarily remote and includes occasional travel to vessel locations or manufacturing sites.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and release mechanical hardware, including enclosures, mounts, brackets, interfaces, and installation solutions.

  • Design for sealing, corrosion resistance, vibration, serviceability, manufacturability, and assembly quality.

  • Own mechanical portions of projects from concept through prototyping, testing, and production release.

  • Work with electrical, operations, manufacturing, and suppliers to resolve integration issues and improve reliability.

  • Define and improve standards for cabling, connectorization, mounting, and field installation.

Qualifications (Preferred):
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 5+ years of experience designing mechanical hardware for marine electronics, outdoor electronics, or electromechanical systems in harsh environments.

  • Strong CAD proficiency, preferably in Onshape, with the ability to create production-ready parts and assemblies.

  • Experience designing for manufacturing, assembly, reliability, and field service.

  • Working knowledge of electromechanical integration, including enclosures, cable routing, connectors, and hardware interfaces.

  • Ability to work independently and communicate clearly with remote teams, vendors, and manufacturing partners.

  • Industrial design experience is a plus.

Work Environment:
  • Flexible working hours, with occasional intensive sprints.

  • Occasional travel to vessel installations or manufacturing sites.

  • Opportunity to work on innovative projects with a global impact.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
