About the Team
STR’s Sensors Division is at the forefront of developing advanced signal processing algorithms and prototyping systems for next-generation radar and electronic warfare technologies. Mechanical engineering design, development, and integration support is sought for advanced and operational prototype systems.
STR takes pride in creating a culture of innovation and collaboration. We collaborate with a dynamic group of research engineers across STR, academic researchers, and industry partners to develop practical and effective solutions to RF sensing and counter-sensing challenges. Together, we're dedicated to tackling some of the toughest problems faced by our national security-focused clients.
If you're seeking an opportunity to apply your deep technical knowledge and creativity to make a lasting impact in national security, we invite you to join us.
The Role:
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work with a team to design, build, integrate, and test sensing and counter sensing systems for radar, electronic warfare, sonar, and other applications.
What you will do:
- Design integrated systems that meet specific requirements and constraints. This involves understanding the interactions between components, ensuring functionality, efficiency, and reliability in mechanical systems
- Performance trade studies and analyses of proposed hardware architectures. Systems predominantly field deployable prototypes with the objective of transitioning to low-volume product systems
- Review system effectiveness and identify opportunities to advance and/or mature subsystems and system capabilities
- Document system design and performance for customer review. Present results to customers
- Lead and work with small, multi-disciplinary teams to architect, implement, and test RF hardware systems enabling novel sensing, electronic warfare, and signal processing systems
Who you are:
- Ability to obtain a security clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is required by U.S. Government
- BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline
- 3-5+ years’ of relevant experience depending on degree
- Specific skillsets include:
- Strong Mathematical, troubleshooting, written, and verbal communication skills
- Experience creating prototypes to test and validate designs before full-scale production. This allows for iterative design improvements, reducing risks and ensuring that final products meet user needs and expectations
- Proficient in tools like AutoCAD and SolidWorks, enabling precise design and visualization of mechanical components
- Familiarity with various materials and their properties that enables the selection of the right materials to support innovative and operational engineering solutions
- Knowledgeable in FEA techniques to simulate physical phenomena and predict how products will react to real-world forces
- Skilled in planning, organizing, and executing projects from conception to completion, with strong record-keeping and documentation to track design evolution and progress
- Adept at identifying issues and developing innovative solutions in mechanical systems
- Ability to convey complex technical information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences
- Strong ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams. Collaborate with the team to quantify goals, system performance objectives, metrics, dependencies, and risks to guide your work
- Understanding of industry regulations and standards ensures that designs comply with safety and environmental guidelines
Even Better:
- Active Secret or TS/SCI security clearance
- Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline
- Experience interacting with decision-makers and customers to translate mission needs into an end-to-end analytical solution
- Prior experience with:
- Designing for manufacturability, producibility, and cost constraints
- Applying novel, innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to challenging engineering problems
- Creating and presenting briefings to customers and senior management to provide both high-level and deep technical solution explanations
