Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Manufacturing processes in Santa Rosa include roll-to-roll thin film coating for pigment products and rigid substrate thin film coatings to achieve specific optical properties. Wafer level packaging (WLP) processes allow use of integrated circuits within the wafers that then receive a patterned thin film coating, enhancing customer value.
Other manufacturing sites supported include Beijing China and Chandler Arizona (roll-to-roll coating), Suzhou China (rigid substrates coating), and Rochester New York (optical diffusers).
Seeking an experienced Design Engineer to support thin film coating platforms and post processing equipment that makes up the manufacturing value stream.
The 24-7 production facility is a high-technology environment, where safety is paramount, and employees are engaged to support world class manufacturing. VIAVI is an industry leader in thin film coatings, optical products in consumer electronics, pigments, and vacuum technology.
This position will have a focus on design and documentation of equipment, both new and retrofit upgrades to resolve production challenges. The primary design tool is the 3D design software Siemens NX.
Duties & Responsibilities:

- Support factory operations by designing and developing vacuum coating machine process equipment primarily in support of roll-to-roll manufacturing for new product development.
- Work with Operations and R&D teams to design and develop new vacuum coating systems and electro-mechanical assemblies. VIAVI supports a broad array of production equipment both in-house designs, and vendor supplied.
- Produce production part drawings using primarily Siemens NX, SolidWorks and AutoCAD. Drawing control is through Teamcenter and PDM applications.
- Provide modeling and design of Vacuum/deposition systems, assemblies, and components.
- Upgrade Physical Vapor Deposition coating systems for new processes, capabilities, and performance improvements.
- Provide thoughtful and functional 3D CAD designs and participate in design reviews.
- Manage prototype fabrication and assembly, including rapid 3D prototyping, laser cutting, water jet and other rapid fabrication technologies. Good understanding of machining and fabrication processes including milling, lathe turning, grinding etc.
- Broad understanding of materials properties including material compatibility and failure modes.
- Provide mechanical tolerance analysis and design for the manufacturing of precision electro-mechanical systems.
- Work within established VIAVI personnel and work management practices and applications.

- Strong interpersonal skills to work with a variety of team members including internal Customers, Engineering staff, Operations personnel, Maintenance technicians, Fabrication Shops, Vendors, Research and Development department, Sales and Marketing, external customers and others.
- Creative and flexible yet have a disciplined detail-oriented approach to process and engineering design.
- Experience in Vacuum systems and PVD processes.
- Proven capabilities with tight tolerance designs and integration of customer requirements.
- Able to work with deadlines and within project schedules while handling multiple assignments.
- Ability to self-learn new technical subjects and interested in working within our high-tech environment.
- Ability to communicate with Engineers, Operator, vendors and VIAVI management.
- Project Management skills
Basic Qualifications:
- 5 years 3D modeling using Siemens NX or SolidWorks for the successful development of precision mechanical assemblies and electro-mechanical systems.
- Able to work with typical office computer programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, SharePoint and similar off-the-shelf Microsoft programs.
- Able to read, interpret, and communicate to others regarding design details and engineering requirements.
- Knowledge and experience with GD&T requirements.
