Position Title: Senior Manager, M&A Corporate Development (Financial Modeling)

Location: San Diego (Hybrid)

This is a full-time role, Monday through Friday, with an expectation of 2-3 in-office days per week and additional on-site presence as needed. The individual must reside in the San Diego area and be able to commute to our corporate offices.

Position Summary:

The corporate development team is responsible for shaping Illumina’s inorganic growth. This role will have primary responsibility to analyze new M&A, strategic investment, and divestiture opportunities and conduct comprehensive due diligence. This position will build and own detail, decision-range financial models to evaluate M&A opportunities, incorporating valuation, transaction structuring, and scenario analysis to inform investment decisions. This work requires deep expertise in building complex financial models from scratch, including fully integrated financial models to support transaction evaluation.

The individual in this role will also orchestrate diligence including organizing a cross functional team to examine commercial, technology, and administrative issues related to M&A opportunities. The ability to synthesize large amounts of information; commercial, technology, and administrative into an executive level summary is essential for success. This position has the growth potential to become a deal lead in the future.

Responsibilities:

  • Analysis: Lead, support, and own analysis of M&A opportunities. Find external and internal sources of information related to the market, competitive situation, technology, intellectual property, capabilities, and financials. Synthesize and summarize into a clear and accurate analysis of the opportunity as it relates to Illumina, including linkage to valuation and key model drivers.

  • Financial Modeling and Valuation: Own the development and continuous refinement of complex valuation models including DCF, comparable company analysis, precedent transaction analysis. Build integrated transaction models incorporating accretion/dilution, pro forma financials, and synergy assumptions. Perform scenario and sensitivity analysis to evaluate valuation ranges, return profiles (e.g., IRR, ROI), and key deal risks. Translate model outputs and assumptions into clear financial narratives to support executive decision making.

  • Diligence: Lead diligence on targets through collaboration with key functions in the company to determine potential risks and integration issues associated with an opportunity. Coordinate the team, orchestrate an analysis along a prescribed timeline, and present findings to executive leadership.

  • Integration & Value Capture: Partner with integration leaders to design integration strategies, operating models, and synergy plans for completed acquisitions, including tracking and validating value realization against deal models.

  • Executive Communication & Influence: Develop high-quality materials and analyses for the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), CEO, CFO, and Board of Directors. Communicate complex strategic, financial, and technical issues with clarity and authority. Influence decision-making across senior stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 12 years of related experience in M&A transactions, including evaluation, diligence, negotiation, and integration, or an equivalent combination of experience and education

  • Demonstrated experience in investment banking (M&A), valuation services, private equity, or corporate development, with a strong preference for individuals with formal training in financial modeling from a leading investment bank or valuation-focused role

  • Relevant knowledge of companies and technologies in biotechnology, diagnostics, is a plus

  • Must have advanced investment and acquisition modeling skills developed from an analyst-level role (IB or equivalent), including the ability to build complex financial models from scratch

  • Advanced expertise in valuation and transaction modeling, including comparable company analysis, precedent transactions, and accretion/dilution modeling

  • Strong analytical rigor with the ability to translate business drivers, market dynamics, and technical or scientific inputs into robust financial assumptions

  • Demonstrated track record of independently driving deal analysis and cross-functional workstreams at a leading investment bank, private equity/venture firm, or corporate development team

  • Strong strategic thinking with the ability to translate scientific, commercial, and financial insights into actionable recommendations

  • Exceptional communication, executive presence, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to partner effectively across senior leadership

  • Must be able to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time to support team collaboration, attend key business meetings, and engage with stakeholders across multiple locations. A valid passport is required and/or additional documentation (e.g., travel visas) may be necessary based on destination-specific requirements.

The estimated base salary range for the Senior Manager, M&A Corporate Development (San Diego/Hybrid) role based in the United States of America is: $155,600 - $233,400. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
