About Marker Learning:

Marker Learning is on a mission to help schools and parents access more affordable and accessible learning disability (e.g., dyslexia) assessments. 1 in 5 students has a learning disability such as dyslexia, which makes it harder for them to read, spell, and write--despite their intelligence. While receiving a proper evaluation for a learning disability could be the most impactful event in a student’s life, it is estimated that only 4% of students receive a diagnosis because of the high costs of evaluations and lack of access to qualified psychologists. Undiagnosed students are 3x more likely to drop out of high school, 5x more likely to be unemployed, and tend to experience elevated levels of anxiety and depression.

By leveraging proprietary technology developed by leading experts, the end-to-end Marker evaluation is completed in a fraction of the time compared to traditional assessment methods. Marker is a rapidly growing start-up backed by some of the most mission-driven and reputable venture capital firms and education non-profits.
Join us in our mission to inspire and support all students on their unique learning paths!

The Role
At Marker Learning, you’ll play a pivotal role in empowering psychologists and clinicians with innovative tools that streamline assessments, diagnoses, reporting, and evaluation management. Our mission is to drive better outcomes for students and schools by developing AI-powered solutions that harness structured and unstructured data to make the diagnostic process more efficient and insightful.

We’re looking for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to lead the charge on productionizing AI features across parsing, summarization, and chat-based report editing. You’ll own the full ML lifecycle—from prototype to prod—and architect the infrastructure that makes these systems reliable, fast, and impactful.

You’ll partner closely with other MLEs and product engineers, and domain experts to ensure our LLM-based features are not only powerful, but also trustworthy and tightly integrated with our user workflows.

What You’ll Do

  • Own and scale the end-to-end ML lifecycle: data pipelines, training, serving, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Build and productionize systems for:
    • AI document parsing (OCR, classification, extraction)
    • LLM-powered summarization and content generation
    • Chat interfaces for editing special education reports
    • Optimize model performance, latency, reliability, and cost
  • Partner with engineers and PMs to deliver high-quality, user-facing AI features
  • Establish best practices for LLM evaluations, structured prompt engineering, fallback strategies, and continuous improvement
  • Raise the bar on technical design, testing, and observability across ML systems

What We’re Looking For

  • 8+ years of overall engineering experience
  • Strong track record in shipping production ML systems
  • Deep experience in ML infrastructure, pipelines, and model serving
  • Deep, hands-on experience with LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation, or document intelligence
  • Strong Python and ML ecosystem fluency (e.g., PyTorch, LangChain, Weaviate, HuggingFace)
  • Systems thinking—understands how models interact with APIs, databases, and frontend features
  • Bias for action, pragmatic mindset, and thrives in a fast-moving startup environment

Interested? Great! Here's what you should know:

At Marker Learning, we know that our people are indispensable to achieving our mission, and we are building an inclusive environment that enables everyone to do their best work. We are a mission-driven team out to provide reliable and affordable testing to every student who requires it, and we believe that Marker Learning has the potential to change the evaluation landscape across the country. We'd love to hear from you if you're motivated by our mission and eager to contribute to our team and culture!

We are dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workforce. Marker Learning provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, marital status, amnesty, or status as covered veteran in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
