With over 175+ million users, we’re the #1 rated push-to-talk app in the world, delivering 9 billion (yes, with a B) messages a month.

At Zello, our company values are at the heart of what we do everyday. We’re proud to serve the frontline, we’re privileged to connect people in times of crisis across the globe, and we’re honored to support first responders.

And this is where you come in.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, highly capable Staff iOS Engineer to join our mobile application development team. You are an initiative-taker, excited to create a meaningful impact for thousands of customers and millions of consumers every day.

You'll own our iOS ecosystem from start to finish, working closely with our product and design team, applying scalable development patterns, maintainable code practices, and sharp technical decisions that inform and direct the architecture of the future.

We offer a high freedom/high responsibility work environment, competitive salary, and generous stock options.

After a successful first year, you will
  • Accelerate the velocity of the team by safely increasing our release frequency

  • Create a technical roadmap that aligns with our product and company objectives

  • Collaborate with the team to establish standards around quality, testing, formatting and code review processes

  • Enhance the codebase with targeted refactoring and comprehensive test coverage, significantly improving overall code quality

  • Establish a production oriented culture on the team by regularly reviewing metrics and analytics and establishing mitigation strategies for any issus

What you’ll do
  • Set coding, quality, and formatting standards and drive implementation with the team

  • Improve and enhance existing code using modern patterns and practices

  • Proactively address app crashes, field issues, and customer feedback

  • Quickly master new and evolving technologies, apply them to complex challenges, and share your insights with the team

What you’ll bring
  • Deep working knowledge of Swift, Objective C (+ iOS SDK), UIKit and SwiftUI. C++ and CoreAudio experience is a plus.

  • 7+ years of software development experience for iOS

  • Published apps in the App Store - include links in your resume or cover letter

  • Clear comprehension of OOP, concurrency, synchronization, memory management and all the little things that make development complicated and interesting

  • Good knowledge of design patterns, guidelines and best practices

  • Good insight on how networks work (TCP, UDP, sockets, HTTP, TLS etc)

  • Worked in an environment where releases occurred at least every 2 weeks

We hire for potential, passion for our mission, and a knack for solving difficult problems over checking every qualification box. We have competitive pay, equity with significant upside, and intentionally design our benefits to encourage healthy and well-balanced employees, flexible schedules and time off. We even offer a sabbatical after every five years of service so you’re able to pursue and enjoy what matters most to you. And of course, we wouldn’t be a technology company in Austin without a ping-pong table and free snacks in our break room. Join us!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
