The Senior Infrastructure & Tooling Engineer will design solutions to improve developer productivity, optimize Kubernetes infrastructure, and ensure security measures for Astro platform services.
The summary above was generated by AI

Astronomer designed Astro, an industry-leading, orchestration-first DataOps platform for data teams. Powered by Airflow, Astro accelerates building reliable data products that unlock insights, unleash AI value, and drive data-driven applications.

We’re a globally-distributed and rapidly growing venture-backed team of learners, innovators and collaborators. Our mission is to empower data teams to bring mission-critical analytics, AI, and software to life.  As a member of our team, you will be at the forefront of the industry as we strive to deliver the world's data.

Your background may be unconventional; as long as you have the essential qualifications, we encourage you to apply. While having "bonus" qualifications makes for a strong candidate, Astronomer values diverse experiences. Many of us at Astronomer haven't followed traditional career paths, and we welcome it if yours hasn't either.

About this role:

Astronomer’s R&D team is laser-focused on delivering a great experience managing Apache Airflow at scale today. This role, in the Astro Platform Services team, helps with this mission by providing a stable infrastructure platform, release automation, and developer tooling, to the teams building and supporting the Astro platform.

We’re looking for someone who’s excited to work on a team with a broad charter. You will bring expertise in some areas and be eager to learn and grow in the others. You will be motivated to develop high quality tools for our engineers, to help service teams get code to production faster and safer, and to support the Kubernetes infrastructure platform that underpins our product.

What you get to do:

  • Identify and design solutions and tools to improve developer productivity, particularly with respect to reducing MTTR and increasing deployment velocity.

  • Optimize and evolve the Kubernetes based infrastructure that’s supporting the control planes of our Astro platform.

  • Diagnose and fix problems related to network and cloud infrastructure.

  • Work with an SRE mindset, helping teams implement SLOs, synthetic testing, and guidance on how to use our tooling and observability systems.

  • Work closely with our security team, to implement guardrails and systems to ensure we are following a least-privilege, just-in-time access model for our systems.

What you bring to the role:

  • 5+ years of engineering experience,  working on a Linux and container based cloud infrastructure underpinning an always-on, critical function.

  • A ‘customer oriented’ mindset, experience building tools and services that other teams love to use.

  • Proficiency with Golang, Python, or similar languages, and a desire to learn Golang

  • Production experience with CI/CD, deploying to a Kubernetes environment.

  • Understanding of how to build with security in mind.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Familiarity with Azure and AKS.

  • Familiarity with GitOps tools, such as Flux, Flagger or ArgoCD.

  • Experience designing infrastructure for resiliency and high availability.

The estimated salary for this role ranges from $170,000 - $200,000, along with an equity component and a comprehensive benefits package. This range is merely an estimate, and the width of the range reflects willingness to consider candidates with broad prior seniority. Actual compensation may deviate from this range based on skills, experience, and qualifications.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
