Job Description:

At Remitly, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access, move, and manage their money wherever life takes them. Since 2011, we've tirelessly delivered on our promise to customers sending money globally, providing secure, simple, and reliable ways to manage their money, ensuring true peace of mind. Whether it's supporting loved ones back home, growing a business across continents, or pursuing new opportunities abroad, we're not just here to move money— we're here to move our global customers forward.
We're looking for builders, reimaginers, and global thinkers who want to work at the intersection of technology, trust, and transformation. If that's you and you're ready to do the most meaningful work of your career—we invite you to join over 2,800 passionate Remitlians worldwide who are united by our vision to transform lives with trusted financial services that transcend borders.

About the Role:

We're hiring Senior Software Development Engineers (SDE3) across multiple engineering teams in our Seattle office. This is a batch hiring effort spanning teams throughout the company — including groups like USA Regional Experiences and High Value Send Experience, among others — so your background and interests will help determine the best team fit during the interview process. Every team shares a common thread: full-stack ownership of customer-facing product experiences, high engineering standards, and a mandate to build the next generation of trusted, borderless financial services.

As a full-stack Senior SDE, you'll own ambiguous, high-impact problems end-to-end — from customer-facing web and mobile experiences down through the backend services and systems that power them. You'll partner closely with product managers, designers, analysts, and fellow engineers to translate customer needs into scalable, reliable software, while helping shape the technical direction and engineering culture of your team.

You Will:

  • Lead technical design and architecture for complex, often greenfield problems — breaking ambiguity into clear technical strategies and measurable outcomes.

  • Build full-stack, customer-facing features spanning web and mobile front ends (TypeScript, React or React Native) and backend services (Java, Kotlin, Go, or Python).

  • Partner with product managers, designers, analysts, and other engineers to gather requirements and deliver scalable, high-quality software with a customer-centric mindset.

  • Ship well-tested, observable, well-documented, efficient, and resilient systems that meet reliability and latency expectations.

  • Use AI-powered development tools throughout the software development lifecycle to deliver faster while maintaining quality and security standards.

  • Drive improvements to team processes, shape cross-team technical designs, and divide complex features into components that can be parallelized for timely delivery.

  • Strengthen engineering culture by mentoring peers, leading technical discussions, conducting code reviews, participating in interviews, and supporting onboarding.

  • Participate in an on-call rotation to support the reliability of your team's services.

  • Report to the Engineering Manager of your team.

You Have:

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience, including experience building and operating systems end-to-end.

  • Strong computer science, web, and native app fundamentals, with solid knowledge of design patterns.

  • 3+ years of hands-on React or React Native development experience, and experience building customer-facing experiences at product scale.

  • Proficiency in one or more modern backend languages — TypeScript, JavaScript, Java, Kotlin, or Go.

  • Experience using AI tools throughout your own software development workflow (e.g., Claude Code or similar).

  • Experience with distributed, large-scale systems and a working understanding of service-oriented or microservices architecture.

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, including managed services.

  • Excellent collaboration skills and a track record of working cross-functionally with product, design, and analytics.

  • Bonus: experience in FinTech, payments, or another regulated industry where reliability, security, and compliance shape engineering decisions.

Compensation Details. The starting base salary range for this position is typically $180,000-$225,000. In the U.S., Remitly employees are shareholders in our Company and equity is part of our total compensation plan. Your recruiter can share more information about medical benefits offered, as well as other financial benefits and total compensation components offered with this role.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
