Design and build frontend for Spice.ai Cloud Platform, creating intuitive interfaces for data and AI tools while ensuring performance and user experience.
Building data-driven AI applications and agents is too complex, even for advanced developers. At Spice AI, we’re making it simpler by helping developers combine code, data, and AI to build truly intelligent, decision-making systems. Our mission is to make this as easy as creating a modern web page.
We created Spice.ai OSS, a portable AI database written in Rust with a unified SQL interface to query, materialize, and accelerate data from any source, co-located with machine learning models. By bringing compute, data, and models together, Spice OSS enables secure AI-Feedback-Loops (AI-Fly-Wheels) for apps and agents to learn and adapt. We just announced the 1.0-stable release of Spice.ai OSS.
For a deeper dive into the vision, watch Luke's CMU Databases talk on Spice.ai OSS at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyM-ec1lKfU and read his Materialized View interview at https://materializedview.io/p/building-a-cdn-for-databases-spice-ai.
We're also building the Spice.ai Cloud Platform, offering managed, cloud-scale Spice.ai OSS along with tools for high-performance SQL, machine learning training, and inference in an interconnected AI backend-as-a-service.
At Spice AI, we hire for MEI: Merit, Excellence, and Intelligence. We're looking for exceptional, top-tier engineers - A players - who are driven to solve hard problems and push the boundaries of what's possible for AI.
As a Senior Frontend & Design Engineer, you will design and build the frontend for the Spice.ai Cloud Platform, creating intuitive interfaces that empower developers to query data, search, inference, and deploy intelligent applications and agents with minimal friction. Your work will directly shape how thousands of developers interact with complex AI systems, turning abstract data and compute concepts into accessible, high-performance tools that accelerate innovation in decision-making applications. This role demands expertise in crafting pixel-perfect UX while integrating robust frontend architectures, ensuring the platform scales to handle real-time AI workloads and delivers measurable value to our users from day one.
Who we are looking for
- You are an exceptional engineer and designer.
- You are a problem solver. You start with customer problems and figure out how to solve them with technology.
- You think differently. You do not accept the status-quo. You challenge the current model of the world and take leaps of faith to build it better for everyone.
- You are positive. Instead of focusing on limitations, you ask what’s possible.
- You care about meaningful work. Your work is more than a job.
- You are comfortable with ambiguity and unknowns, and in these situations, you lead by creating clarity.
- You are passionate about high performance and have high standards.
What we're looking for
- At least 5 years professional experience in frontend development with React, Next.js, and TailwindCSS, including deploying to Vercel and integrating with Supabase and Cloudflare.
- Expertise in design tools, with mastery of Figma for UX, web, and product design.
- Experience designing, implementing, and shipping production frontend systems for developer-focused products, such as tools, platforms, or APIs that target software engineers.
- A track record of strong design, architectural, engineering, and product decisions in frontend and UI/UX contexts.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to ramp up quickly and hit the ground running.
- Ideally, fullstack capabilities with knowledge of databases, data pipelines, search systems, and AI integrations.
- Ideally, experience contributing to open-source projects.
- Experience with cloud-native development and modern web stacks.
Your responsibilities
- An outstanding contributor in the Spice.ai frontend and design efforts, including the Spice.ai Cloud Platform dashboard, spicerack.org, and developer-facing interfaces.
- Creating, designing, and building intuitive UX for data and AI tools, focusing on web-based experiences that simplify complex workflows for developers.
- Take ownership and drive initiatives for improving the product through frontend innovations, design iterations, and stack optimizations.
Your first 90-days
- Your first month - ramp up and contribute improvements to the Spice.ai frontend codebase and design prototypes.
- 30-60 days - contribute to weekly Spice.ai platform releases, including UI updates and design refinements.
- 60-90 days - take technical and design ownership of an entire feature area, such as a developer dashboard or AI integration interface.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene
Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.
Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech
- Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
- Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
- Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
- Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
- Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
- Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
