About Axial

Axial’s mission is to unleash the potential of private capital markets. Our immediate focus is to enable outstanding exits and acquisitions for every American small business. We have created a pioneering digital marketplace that serves thousands of buyers, advisors, and owners of privately held companies. In 2023, we had 20,000 companies on our platform looking for capital partners, leading to over one million connections with interested parties.

Founded in 2009 in New York City, we are a growing, consistently profitable private company owned by our employees and our founders. We are remote-friendly, gather in New York as a company at organized times each year, and pursue a culture of excellence, freedom, and teamwork.

As a member of the engineering team at Axial you’ll have the opportunity to have an impact on both of these use cases. Your experience and technical contributions will have a direct impact on how our members use the platform. This role will provide you with the opportunity to influence our team culture, helping us maintain an environment that fosters continuous improvement, and improving our excellence as an engineering organization.

What will you be doing?

Engineers at Axial face challenges head-on and solve difficult technical problems. What you could be working on:

  • Participate in a two week Scrum cycle where we collaborate directly with Tech and Product Leads to develop and maintain innovative, cutting-edge software.
  • Design and implement user facing features on our Angular web application.
  • Work with our Product Owners to translate business requirements into well formed features on our Angular web application.
  • Collaborate with other engineers, product owners, and designers to work in conjunction with our core platform services and python based API servers.
  • Review and test code, as well as maintain automated unit-tests.
  • Here are some of the upcoming projects we currently working on this year:
    • Product-Led Growth – Axial has historically relied on its sales team to onboard new members onto the platform. Our goal is to create the acquisition, qualification, and activation capabilities necessary to onboard and retain new Axial members. This will be a large transformation of core capabilities on the frontend application.
    • Mobile-Friendly UX – Axial has been successful in focusing primarily on a desktop experience, but the time has come for the platform to be mobile-accessible.  Both our buy-side and sell-side members are skewing more mobile native, and we need to meet them where they are.
    • Member Reputation - We’re building a set of features to reward our members for their professional accomplishments to incentivize positive behavior on the platform and to help them quickly build trust with each other.

We are looking for someone who…

  • Is A Generalist - If you enjoy navigating all sorts of problems regardless of the toolchain or technology, then you're probably a good fit for this role. Our engineers are folks who are comfortable building products end-to-end, improving our development environment, setting up production environments, researching technology solutions (APIs, OSS, etc). Any expertise with these technologies are an added bonus: Python, SQL, AWS, Docker/Kubernetes.
  • Moves Fast - We need to find a balance between moving fast, and building for the long haul. We think the best way to do so is to minimize scope, prioritize ruthlessly, and implement rigorously so that we're building for the long haul. We're looking for someone who can do the same.
  • Shares Our Engineering Team Values - At an extremely early stage, we believe it's important that we share common values. We talked about some of them above. On engineering, here are some of the things we value:
    • Be rigorous, get it right - Just because code has been written doesn’t mean it can’t be improved. As a team, we take code review feedback seriously as an opportunity to make things better.
    • Manage Technical Debt Actively - We view technical debt as having a wide variety of “interest rates.” We’re OK with some forms of low-interest technical debt  when and if it lets us work smarter and build more value for our customers sooner; when we take on debt, we as a team always seek to have a “repayment plan” scheduled to occur over the mid-term (usually 6-24 months).
    • Never EVER lose sight of the customer - Software engineering is a deep field and it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important, so it’s critical to constantly remind ourselves why we’re doing this – for our customers.

Working at Axial:

We are remote-friendly, so you can work from anywhere in North America provided that you have stable and reliable access to bandwidth and are able to work Eastern Time in the USA. For those that are NYC-based, we have a casual, engineer-friendly office in Manhattan. For those who live within a reasonable commuting distance to the office, we run a hybrid in-office policy

We are a small company with a small engineering team (currently 12 of us). We have a senior, tightly-knit engineering team, where you will have the opportunity to have a direct impact on the product and the company. We use Scrum, including daily standups at 10am, bi-weekly sprint reviews and sprint retrospectives. Since much of our team is fully remote, we use Shortcut to track our work through the development cycle.

Below are the values we believe in as a company, so if you genuinely like these values, you may enjoy working here.

  • Obsess Over Member Trust: Your daily choices reflect your awareness that we facilitate vital life-altering transactions. You take this responsibility seriously and it’s top of mind.
  • Expect and Deliver Excellence: You demonstrate consistency so that your colleagues feel confident partnering and relying on you. You demonstrate a personal commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Communication Matters: You are concise and articulate in your communication, external or internal. You listen well and genuinely.
  • Invent and Simplify: You are open-minded, looking for great new ideas that can elevate and even transform the member experience. You find novel ways to simplify complex status quos.
  • Be an Owner. You think about the long-term effects of your decisions. You invest real time in building relationships with your colleagues.

At Axial you will enjoy:

  • Robust medical, dental and vision insurance
  • 401k program
  • Flexible Time Off Policy
  • Wellness reimbursement program
  • Pre-tax commuter program
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • FSA + HSA
  • Feedback and development rich culture
  • Regular company and team events!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
