Machinify is a leading healthcare intelligence company with expertise across the payment continuum, delivering unmatched value, transparency, and efficiency to health plan clients across the country. Deployed by over 60 health plans, including many of the top 20, and representing more than 160 million lives, Machinify brings together a fully configurable and content-rich, AI-powered platform along with best-in-class expertise. We’re constantly reimagining what’s possible in our industry, creating disruptively simple, powerfully clear ways to maximize financial outcomes and drive down healthcare costs.

Machinify's Core Platform team is the foundation that powers our healthcare AI products. We're seeking an exceptional Senior Engineering Manager who combines deep technical expertise in platform engineering with proven people leadership skills. You'll lead the team responsible for building and evolving our internal platform-as-a-product—the self-service APIs, tools, services, and infrastructure that enable our product teams to ship faster, safer, and more reliably. This role requires someone who has built middleware and services for multiple applications at scale, understands what makes great platform engineering, and can evangelize platform adoption across the organization.

You'll manage a team of backend engineers working on critical platform capabilities including feature flagging, job processing infrastructure, event-driven architecture, observability, data query layer, application framework and developer tooling. This is a hands-on, technically deep leadership role where you'll balance strategic platform roadmap planning with day-to-day execution and team development.

Does this sound like the right opportunity to explore?... Lets connect!

What You’ll Do

  • Lead Platform Engineering Initiatives: Own the technical roadmap and execution for Core Platform services which are the foundations for the business application verticals, and enabling them at scale.

  • Build and Grow High-Performing Teams: Manage, mentor, and develop a team of backend engineers; conduct 1:1s, performance reviews, career development conversations, and hiring

  • Drive Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product engineering teams to understand their needs and evolve the platform to serve them better; act as an internal consultant and evangelist for platform adoption

  • Architect Scalable Platform Solutions: Own the design and implementation middleware and services that support multiple applications; ensure platform components are composable, flexible, secure-by-default, and self-service. Participate in architecture reviews, write RFCs, and drive technical decision-making; stay hands-on with code reviews and technical guidance when needed

  • Champion Engineering Excellence: Establish best practices for platform development including API design, versioning, backward compatibility, observability, and documentation; reduce cognitive load for platform consumers.

  • Balance Technical Debt and Innovation: Make strategic tradeoffs between feature velocity, technical debt, and platform evolution; use data and ROI frameworks (RICE, etc.) to prioritize initiatives

  • Improve Developer Experience: Measure and optimize platform adoption, API usability, and developer productivity; build tools and documentation that enable self-service

  • Navigate Healthcare Complexity: Understand the unique constraints of healthcare systems including compliance, data security, multi-tenancy, and audit requirements; ensure platform solutions meet healthcare standards

  • Own Operational Excellence: Ensure platform services meet SLAs for availability, performance, and reliability; Establish monitoring, alerting, and incident response processes

What You'll Bring

Required:

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience with deep expertise in backend systems, distributed architecture, and platform engineering

  • 3+ years of engineering management experience leading teams of 6-10+ engineers; proven ability to hire, develop, and retain top talent

  • Platform Engineering Expertise: You've built middleware, shared services, or platform capabilities that serve multiple applications and teams; you understand what makes a great internal platform

  • Distributed Systems Experience: Strong understanding of microservices, event-driven architecture, message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ), API design, and service mesh patterns. Experience deploying such services to production at scale.

  • Backend Technology Depth: Proficiency in modern backend languages (Scala, Java, Python, Go, or similar) and frameworks; experience with containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)

  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Proven ability to lead initiatives across multiple teams; experience working with product managers, designers, and other engineering leaders to drive outcomes

  • Super Organized and Detail-Oriented: Exceptional project management skills; ability to juggle multiple initiatives, track dependencies, and deliver on commitments; creates clarity from ambiguity.

  • Technical Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to write clear RFCs, architecture docs, and API specifications; can explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders

  • Product Mindset: Treats the platform as a product with internal customers; gathers requirements, prioritizes based on impact, and measures adoption and satisfaction

Preferred:

  • AI/ML Platform Experience: Built infrastructure for LLM integration, model serving, ML pipelines, or AI application development; understanding of prompt engineering, RAG systems, or AI observability

  • Healthcare Payment Integrity Domain Experience: Experience with several of: healthcare claims processing, payment integrity, medical coding, clinical NLP, healthcare data models, data mining in the domain.

  • Large-Scale Systems: Built platform services supporting hundreds of developers or processing millions of transactions per day

  • DevOps and Infrastructure: Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and GitOps workflows

  • Data Platform Experience: Built data pipelines, event streaming platforms, or analytics infrastructure

  • Strangler Fig Pattern: Experience with incremental migration strategies, legacy system modernization, or service extraction from monoliths

What We Offer:

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance

  • 401(k) with company match

  • Professional development budget

  • Equity compensation

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
