Job Description

JOB DETAILS

We are looking for a senior energy engineer to lead the delivery of retro commissioning and commissioning services within a dynamic and mission driven retrofit energy projects design build team. This engineer will conduct onsite technical assessments, implement energy-saving measures, and optimize the performance of HVAC and building management systems (BMS), to enhance energy performance and reduce operating costs in critical commercial and industrial facilities across the U.S.

Candidates must have strong technical and field expertise and in-depth understanding of the HVAC industry, energy auditing practices, and a proven track record of producing high-quality technical reports and recommendations. The position requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Effective communication skills are essential.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and deliver multiple retro-commissioning (RCx) projects, from initial site assessment through implementation, and energy performance verification.
  • Lead the commissioning (Cx) scope for multiple retrofit energy projects, beginning with documentation of owner project requirements through function and performance testing and final closeout documentation.
  • Prepare project estimates, schedules, and work plans.
  • Conduct design reviews, submittal reviews, review and facilitation of training plans, and O&M manual reviews. Review product data submittals across multiple projects to ensure that the equipment ordered aligns with performance requirements and Owner’s specifications.
  • Develop plans for on-site testing, create pre-functional and functional checklists and conduct field functional testing, document test results, maintain issue resolution logs, and prepare commissioning reports.
  • Execute and conduct ASHRAE Level I and II energy audits, field investigations, baselining, benchmarking, implementation management, and M&V.
  • Complete engineering calculations in spreadsheets for energy savings analysis.
  • Conduct detailed facility assessments and system diagnostics to identify operational inefficiencies, and then develop and recommend strategies to maximize operating efficiency
  • Utilize utility billing and meter data and data logging equipment and building management system (BMS) trend data to evaluate system performance and identify optimization strategies.
  • Develop and document energy efficiency measures (EEMs) with quantifiable savings, cost-benefit analysis, and implementation strategies; develop written reports detailing technical and financial analyses and resulting recommendations.
  • Use statistical tools or other data techniques to review energy data trends, develop and maintain statistical facility-wide energy models, to conduct Measurement and Verification (M&V) analysis, and to complete M&V reporting
  • Stay informed on industry best practices, energy codes, and utility incentive programs to support continuous improvement and innovation in RCx delivery. Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Eight or more years of controls and HVAC commissioning and retro commissioning experience
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of MEP system design and operation and BMS control strategies for critical facilities, including data centers and technical campuses, hospitals, and life science laboratories.
  • Experience working with multiple building management systems, e.g., ALC, Siemens, Honeywell, Trane, etc.
  • Demonstrated skill completing ASHRAE Level I and II energy audits, field investigations, baselining, benchmarking, project implementation management, and M&V
  • Demonstrated ability to calculate energy savings, perform financial analysis, and write compelling energy reports
  • Bachelor or advanced degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • PE license preferred
  • ANSI accredited commissioning certification through ASHRAE, BCA or ACG.
  • Energy management or TAB certifications are a plus.
  • Strong client relationship and client management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • MS Office Proficiency.
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs and to lift and carry loads over 30 lbs.
  • Capable of working on job sites for periods of 8-10 hours.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
