THE PURPOSE:

The Senior Director of Pod Development Engineering provides strategic vision and leadership to the entire POD engineering program team and has oversight and accountability for all aspects of the POD design, development, and integration. Lead the design and integration of Body Structures, Doors, Interiors and Electrical Control and Infotainment Systems development of the Pod. 

THE ROLE:

  • Responsible for designing, developing, and testing a new generation of pressurized vehicles capable of carrying passengers in a controlled environment below and above grade.
  • Provide guidance, direction, and performance feedback to managers, staff engineers, and directors on highly complex challenges resulting in critical impact to the development of the POD vehicle.
  • Principle technical interface to Program Lead for communicating development progress, negotiating requirements and briefing engineering issues as part of the program contract.
  • Lead a team of development engineers across several sub-departments; Structures, Interiors, Electrical Control, Suspension, Thermal/Fluid, Electromagnetic/Power, to manage and resolve interdepartmental engineering challenges on the vehicle and ensure a converging technical design.
  • Manage ongoing new development and changes to the vehicle.
  • Responsible for managing the vehicle baseline including critical budgets, mass, power, fluids.
  • Generate and tracks vehicle development schedules.
  • Work closely with cross functional engineering teams to ensure seamless technical communication and integration of products.
  • Assure build-milestone deliverables are met and overall budget and quality targets are achieved. 
  • Support cross-functional teams to assure component design/availability for builds/testing as necessary, coordinate department activities to design and modify existing designs of parts and systems.
  • Review and approve of supplier generated design/engineering, resolve problems, set standards and processes and utilize technology trends, talent needs and market demand to plan projects.

CANDIDATE PROFILE: 

  • Building and leading large, complex pressurized vehicle from concept to production.
  • Domain expertise in at least one or more of the POD subsystem areas.
  • Track record of leading large cross functional teams larger than 50.
  • Leading system trade studies.
  • Managing vendor and customer relationships.
  • Track record of scaling a company between stages.
  • Direct experience in designing pressurized vehicles in composites or aluminum materials.
  • Experience in a fast paced, ambiguous environment.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: 

  • Experience designing and developing pressurized vehicle structures.
  • Experience with designing from conceptual vehicle to low volume.
  • Strong fundamental understanding of first principles to complex FE analysis.
  • Experience in state-of-the-art composite and metallic part design.
  • Must have a strong understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) for cost-effective production.
  • Experience in leading cross-functional engineering teams. Experience leading and developing staff, including performance and compensation management, proven mentoring and coaching skills, managing conflict and administering performance plans as needed.
  • Experience in body systems or fuselage development, showing progression from designing parts in a CAD system through managing entire body systems from concept through to production with flawless on-time delivery.
  • In-depth technical expertise with the latest manufacturing technologies, feasibility execution, systems requirements and world class craftsmanship/performance targets.
  • Ability to interpret CAE results into product designs.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage difficult projects with tight timing constraints.
  • Familiarity with lightweight materials used in transportation products and the processes used in the design, analysis and manufacturing of these materials and products.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 

  • Top tier engineering school.
  • Bachelor of Science or higher in mechanical engineering; or the equivalent in experience.
  • Experience managing Aerospace Fuselage/Structures Engineering teams.
