The Senior Director of Energy Efficiency will serve as a key member of the senior leadership team, reporting to the CA Regional Sr. Director. This role is responsible for providing strategic direction and overseeing all aspects of program delivery within their portfolio, while collaborating closely with senior executives and departmental leadership to advance company goals.
The ideal candidate brings a strong strategic mindset, a proven track record of leading large teams to successful outcomes, and deep expertise in energy efficiency program delivery and client management. They bring deep knowledge of contracts and the contracting process and can work with a diverse group of stakeholders (such as legal) to drive contracts forward and resolve issues. They are a natural problem solver with a high degree of accountability, sound judgment, and emotional intelligence. A skilled relationship builder, they are committed to fostering collaboration, developing talent, and delivering exceptional results.
Energy Solutions operates as a predominantly remote workforce with offices in six different locations. Employees who reside within 40 miles of an office (except New York) will be assigned to that location, though in-office attendance requirements may vary by team. Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
- Helps develop and execute long-term strategies that position the company as an industry leader, while aligning with organizational goals, objectives, and operational constraints.
- Collaborates closely with Product, GMS, and Executive teams to ensure strategic alignment and to anticipate and meet evolving business needs.
- Drives profitable and strategic growth by maintaining a strong, forward-looking pipeline within the portfolio, ensuring alignment with company-wide priorities.
- Serves as a key strategic advisor in the department and a key decision maker supporting initiatives.
- Provides proactive leadership and direction to teams to ensure departmental objectives are met and exceeded.
- Identifies and resolves operational challenges within programs early by applying technical and managerial expertise—minimizing the need for escalations.
- Leads internal communications with an understanding of the weight leadership messages carry, ensuring clarity, alignment, and consistency with company values.
- Participates in senior leadership meetings to shape company-wide policy and inform key strategic decisions.
Financial & Business Management
- Oversees program operations for their portfolio, ensuring alignment with corporate priorities and financial targets.
- Leads portfolio budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting in collaboration with the Finance Team.
- Manages a diverse project portfolio, ensuring all initiatives remain on scope, schedule, and budget, through effective oversight of the team.
- Achieves or exceeds financial performance targets, including revenue, gross margin, and overall profitability for portfolio.
- Actively manages risk across the portfolio by implementing company-wide mitigation strategies and applying program management best practices in coordination with shared services.
- Escalates issues promptly and communicates upward with transparency and accountability.
Cross-Functional Partnerships
- Builds strong relationships with their primary team comprised of peer leaders across the organization, proactively communicating and aligning with them to understand shared needs, optimize resources, and drive collective success.
- Helps break down silos and ensure integration across delivery teams, shared services, and support functions.
- Maintains deep awareness of industry trends, policy developments, and emerging technologies.
- Represents Energy Solutions as a visible thought leader through client engagement, industry conferences, and participation in key industry boards and forums.
- Fosters strong, collaborative relationships with clients, partners, trade allies, and internal stakeholders.
- Positions Energy Solutions for continued growth by understanding client business drivers and maintaining a trusted, visible presence in the market.
Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement
- Identifies opportunities for increased efficiency and productivity to help offset annual cost increases and improve margin.
- Champions innovation and continuous improvement in service delivery and internal operations.
- Regularly assesses the health of the portfolio and its contribution to departmental performance—sharing best practices across the organization.
- Recommends and oversees recovery strategies for underperforming teams or programs, tracking progress against defined performance goals.
- Serves as a change agent, guiding teams through transitions and driving organizational improvements.
Team Development & Leadership
- Provides strategic leadership across the department, ensuring teams and individuals are aligned with company goals and performing at a high level.
- Directly oversees and mentors senior leaders such as Directors and Associate Directors.
- Builds and sustains high-performing teams through thoughtful recruitment, talent development, and employee engagement.
- Supports the growth and development of direct reports through coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
- Oversees training programs to ensure consistent onboarding and professional development across teams.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 12 years’ experience leading successful high-performing multigenerational teams.
- Proven and sustained experience in portfolio project/program management, client management and business development.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of adapting style to different audiences and stakeholders, both internally and externally representing the company in front of customers.
- Problem solver with a hands-on approach and the ability to anticipate adverse scenarios with thoughtful solutions to address them.
- Ability to make quick decisions and generate buy-in from leadership team members.
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Strategic vision and good professional judgement to plan, negotiate and win profitable contracts, manage risk and execute plans in an effective manner.
- Ability to conceptualize and execute deadline driven projects with strong bias for action and ability to prioritize multiple and competing projects.
- Resilient and able to work in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment with a sense of urgency and bias for action.
- Deep knowledge of contracts and the contracting process, with experience navigating diverse stakeholders to drive agreements through to signature.
- Demonstrated success with implementing and managing complex project management systems and tools.
- Strong financial acumen including budgeting, cost management, and maximizing profitability.
- Strong leadership record demonstrating the ability to grow and influence highly effective teams.
- High level proficient skills with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) to communicate, develop presentations and perform analysis.
- Available for business travel.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proven experience with 12+ years in a senior leadership role.
- 12+ Years in DSM program delivery.
- MBA, JD or other graduate-level degree preferred
- Strong change management and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Knowledge of industry standards in clean energy, technology, utility programs, and policies
Compensation to commensurate with experience with the pay band of $180,000 to $220,000/Annually
Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes a generous retirement package. Energy Solutions provides an excellent benefits package including medical, dental and vision insurance, other pre-tax contribution plans and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
