Job Summary:

We are seeking a Senior Director, Advanced Technology Growth to lead the capture of contracted science and technology research. In this role, you will serve as the bridge between Voyager’s visionary R&D capabilities and the critical needs of the defense and national security community.

We are looking for passionate humans who have deep expertise and understand the US Government Science & Technology (S&T) community in the DoD and IC—specifically engaging with organizations such as DARPA, ONR, AFRL, IARPA, DIU, etc.—as well as adjacent customer communities that drive advanced technology development. You will operate at the intersection of business strategy and deep-tech innovation, ensuring that Voyager’s roadmap aligns with the government’s most pressing future requirements.

This position uniquely combines technical fluency with aggressive business development. It requires a leader who can translate complex engineering concepts into compelling value propositions for government customers. You will act as a "technical entrepreneur" within the company, identifying funding opportunities for early-stage technologies (TRL 3-6) and guiding them through the "valley of death" into programs of record or commercialized product lines.

You will be joining the Advanced Technology Development team, a specialized unit within our Strategic Growth and Technology Organization. This team is responsible for defining and developing Voyager's future technologies, with a relentless focus on high-impact, high-ROI technology and product research and development. Our technology portfolio spans the totality of Voyager's capabilities and beyond—we are tasked with creating both leap-ahead capabilities in existing technology areas and strategically moving into and developing foundational technology in new, uncharted areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Define and Execute S&T Growth Strategy: Develop and lead the comprehensive strategy to identify, shape, and capture contracted research and development opportunities. You will build a robust pipeline of opportunities within the DoD and IC S&T communities.
  • Lead Capture & Proposal Development: Take ownership of the entire capture lifecycle for complex S&T pursuits. This includes authoring white papers, responding to BAAs (Broad Agency Announcements), managing RFI/RFP responses, and leading customer engagements to shape requirements before they are written.
  • Customer Partnership: Cultivate and maintain deep relationships with program managers and technical directors at key research agencies (DARPA, AFRL, ONR, etc.). You will act as a trusted partner, helping them solve their hardest technical problems with Voyager's capabilities.
  • Bridge Technology & Business: Collaborate closely with the Advanced Technology Development engineering team to translate their technical breakthroughs into fundable programs. You will provide market intelligence to the technical team to ensure internal R&D investment aligns with future customer funding streams.
  • Communicate Technical Value: Evangelize Voyager’s future technology portfolio to external stakeholders, simplifying complex technical advantages into clear strategic benefits for the warfighter and national security enterprise.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM field (Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, etc.)
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a US Government clearance (requires US citizenship)
  • Deep S&T Community Expertise: Proven track record of working with and selling to the US Government S&T community (DARPA, ONR, AFRL, SCO, etc.). You understand how these agencies buy, what they value, and how to shape their requirements.
  • Technical Versatility: A proven technical background and demonstrated comfort with a wide array of technology areas and disciplines. You must be able to "speak the language" of both our engineers and our government customers' technical leads.
  • Early-Stage Capture Success: Proven history of Capture and Sales of advanced technologies spanning TRL 3-6 (Technology Readiness Levels). You have experience moving technologies from the lab bench to prototype demonstration in relevant environments.
  • Strategic Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams (engineering, finance, legal) through high-pressure proposal efforts and strategic planning cycles.
  • Communication: Exceptional writing and briefing skills. You can author a compelling technical white paper and deliver a persuasive executive presentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD in a relevant STEM field (Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, etc.).
  • Active U.S. Top Secret Security Clearance.
  • Prior experience with military contracting, or direct experience serving in the DoD or Government in an S&T capacity.
  • Experience with advanced Space and Defense S&T research and development.
  • Ability to travel 20-50% to customer sites and Voyager locations.

Voyager offers a comprehensive, total compensation package, which includes competitive salary, a discretionary annual bonus plan, paid time off (PTO), a comprehensive health benefit package, retirement savings, wellness program, and various other benefits. When you join our team, you’re not just an employee; you become part of a dynamic community dedicated to innovation and excellence.

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Voyager is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, protected veteran status or other characteristics protected by law.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
