Overview

Chronograph was founded to bring next-generation technology to private capital markets. Through our suite of cloud-based analytics and data management solutions, we help many of the world’s largest and most sophisticated venture capital, private equity, and credit funds understand their investment performance in unprecedented detail, with over $20 trillion of AUM monitored via our solution suite.

At Chronograph, we get to go “behind the scenes” and work directly with investors who are driving some of the most impactful changes across high growth start-ups, global infrastructure and renewable energy, growth equity, and all other private capital strategies. The firm is backed by The Carlyle Group, Nasdaq Inc., and Summit Partners, and has seen continuous rapid growth since its founding in 2016.

The Opportunity

Bring your expertise to a highly collaborative, creative, and innovative team with a market-leading technology product suite. Our engineers execute across the stack, although we are always seeking to provide opportunities that take advantage of individual interests and natural strengths. The thread that unites all engineers at Chronograph is a focus on delivering great products that drive value for our clients.

We hire engineers with a broad set of technical skills, who are highly cross-functional and eager to solve a wide range of engineering challenges. For this role, you would be placed on our DevOps team. This team's mission is to scale the infrastructure that powers our platform and to empower developers throughout the software development lifecycle. Your day-to-day work will involve a mix of software development and operating our internal infrastructure. Executing on this mission enables the continued expansion of our engineering organization, user base, and platform features.

Our ideal candidate has a strong sense of ownership and enjoys owning projects from inception to building to testing to production. We value people who take pride in their work and show an aptitude for learning quickly whether they’re familiar with our stack and tools or not. You'll be working with a nimble team of committed and talented engineers with an engineering culture centered on continuous learning, collaborative knowledge sharing, and both personal and team development.

As a Senior DevOps Engineer at Chronograph, you will:

  • Work with a team building and managing the cloud infrastructure that powers the Chronograph platform
  • Maintain a first-class developer experience for teams by building/integrating tools in ways that are reliable and level-up team efficiency
  • Monitor performance across our applications and work with developers on issues by reviewing logs, dashboards, and other monitoring tools
  • Help shape the evolution and growth of our DevOps team. Many of your contributions will be at the backbone of our company and set us up for years of rapid growth
  • Wear many hats, but we’ll strive to balance team needs with your specific interests and opportunities for growth in e.g. DevEx, SRE, Kubernetes, etc.
  • Elevate your DevOps expertise in an innovative engineering environment that values best practices and cutting-edge tools
  • Participate in architecture reviews, document key workflows and concepts, and write playbooks to ensure teams can triage and own their services
  • Continuously improve the performance, scalability, and security of our infrastructure, services, and tools

You will be successful in this role if you have:

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of professional software engineering experience, primarily working in DevOps, SRE, Platform Engineering roles or similar
  • Architected infrastructure and tools for production SaaS applications, particularly in a rapidly growing startup environment. Our core services are implemented in Ruby on Rails, Node.js, and serverless functions (AWS Lambda), so familiarity with these is a plus
  • Vast experience working with public cloud providers like AWS. Preferably you have also operated production Kubernetes clusters and database systems (we use EKS and Aurora PostgreSQL, respectively)
  • Developed and scaled thoughtful abstractions to help manage infrastructure as code, CI/CD workflows, and local development environments (we currently use Terraform, GitHub Actions, and Docker). You have worked with or evaluated multiple approaches in each of those categories, and know their relative strengths/weaknesses and when to reach for them.
  • Tuned and troubleshooted a variety of systems and databases, addressing issues related to networking (DNS, CDN, WAF, load balancing/reverse proxies) and other configuration/performance issues (optimizing database settings, identifying hardware-related constraints, balancing throughput/latency, using caching to speed up Docker and Webpack builds)
  • Integrated observability tools that enable your team to easily set up logging, metrics, tracing, alarming, etc. for their services
  • Written scripts to automate operational issues and improve productivity using Bash and other high-level programming languages
  • The ability to evaluate different architectural approaches, make sound decisions given the pros and cons, and deliver a clear recommendation to the team
  • Clear communication skills. You are able to help others on the team understand complex technical issues and are committed to writing high-quality documentation
  • A passion for maintainable, readable, stable, secure, and scalable code, infrastructure, and processes. You stay on top of emerging industry best practices and technologies and know when they might be appropriate for us to adopt
  • A collaborative spirit and a positive outlook when solving challenging problems and dealing with unexpected issues

Even if you don’t meet all the criteria, we’d still encourage you to apply! We are growing rapidly and have a variety of needs across multiple roles and focus areas.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
