Who is Flock?

Flock Safety is the leading safety technology platform, helping communities thrive by taking a proactive approach to crime prevention and security. Our hardware and software suite connects cities, law enforcement, businesses, schools, and neighborhoods in a nationwide public-private safety network. Trusted by over 5,000 communities, 4,500 law enforcement agencies, and 1,000 businesses, Flock delivers real-time intelligence while prioritizing privacy and responsible innovation.

We’re a high-performance, low-ego team driven by urgency, collaboration, and bold thinking. Working at Flock means tackling big challenges, moving fast, and continuously improving. It’s intense but deeply rewarding for those who want to make an impact.

With nearly $700M in venture funding and a $7.5B valuation, we’re scaling intentionally and seeking top talent to help build the impossible. If you value teamwork, ownership, and solving tough problems, Flock could be the place for you.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Device Field Application Engineer who will be the go-to technical expert for escalated field issues, supporting and troubleshooting our devices directly in the field, and ensuring customers get the maximum value from our products. You will be responsible for remote and on-site support, troubleshooting complex issues, and providing feedback to our internal hardware and software teams. This role is an opportunity to truly impact and define a critical role within Flock, and requires a unique blend of deep technical knowledge, hands-on problem-solving, and excellent communication skills to act as the face of Flock in the field.

The Skillset

We're looking for people with:

  • A Masters or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 5+ years experience in system, customer engineering support, or similar roles

  • Expertise in embedded systems, including a strong understanding of hardware, firmware, and system integration (e.g., microcontrollers, power systems, connectivity, real-time OS).

  • A proven ability to debug under pressure, rapidly isolating issues across layers (hardware, drivers, application, connectivity).

  • Broad familiarity with the embedded landscape, including Android AOSP, kernel development, commonly used MCUs and Application Processors , and communication standards (CAN, SPI, I²C, Ethernet, PCIe, MIPI, LTE/5G, Wi-Fi, BLE) and how they behave in the field.

  • Specific familiarity with Qualcomm chipsets and Qualcomm-based devices preferred

  • A true problem solving mentality with a systems-thinking approach, recognizing how field conditions (temperature, power availability, RF environment) interact with device behavior.

  • Experience with customer-facing activities, and the ability to translate complex technical issues in a way that is clear and non-defensive to end customers and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Fluency in telemetry, with the ability to interpret logs, uptime percentages, battery levels, CPU load, etc., to make evidence-based recommendations.

  • A structured troubleshooting methodology that allows for problems to be reproduced and solved quickly across teams.

  • A commitment to closing feedback loops, ensuring problems are not just patched locally but are communicated back to stakeholders for root-cause fixes and roadmap impact.

  • A willingness and enthusiasm to travel (~25%) to debug and resolve complex field issues in-situ, contribute to field testing activities and prioritized deployments, as required.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, humility, curiosity, and a passion for sharing knowledge.

Feeling uneasy that you haven’t ticked every box? That’s okay; we’ve felt that way too. Studies have shown women and minorities are less likely to apply unless they meet all qualifications. We encourage you to break the status quo and apply to roles that would make you excited to come to work every day.

90 Days at Flock

We are a results-oriented culture and believe job descriptions are a thing of the past. We prescribe to 90 day plans and believe that good days lead to good weeks, which lead to good months. This serves as a preview of the 90 day plan you will receive if you were to be hired as a Senior Device Field Application Engineer at Flock Safety.

The First 30 Days

  • Develop a comprehensive, hands-on understanding of our entire device portfolio, including the hardware, firmware, and telemetry/logging systems.

  • Become fluent in our data and telemetry tools, learning to interpret logs and system health indicators to diagnose issues remotely.

  • Learn our existing field support process and key initiatives

  • Perform an install ride-along

  • Participate in field-escalation responses to learn our troubleshooting tools and methodologies.

The First 60 Days

  • Begin taking ownership of customer-reported field issues, from initial triage through to resolution, applying a structured troubleshooting methodology with refined decision flows

  • Perform your first site visit to diagnose and document a complex issue in-situ

  • Analyze and root cause embedded system issues, collaborating with other members of the engineering team and providing clear, actionable feedback to drive permanent fixes

90 Days & Beyond

  • Act as the engineering escalation point of contact for complex field escalations.

  • Own the feedback loop by championing customer needs and field learnings within engineering, influencing the product roadmap, and ensuring that problems are not just patched, but truly resolved.

  • Proactively monitor fleet health using telemetry and data analysis to identify potential failure patterns before they become widespread customer issues.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
