Job Overview

We’re seeking a Senior Developer Relations Engineer to be the authentic voice and technical advocate for Buildkite’s practitioner community. This is a hands-on role for someone with a strong engineering or solutions architect background who wants to help developers at scale by building real relationships, creating deep technical content, and fostering community engagement. You’ll combine your technical expertise with a passion for community-building to make Buildkite the platform engineers love and trust.

A Typical Day

  • Build and Engage Developer Community: Actively participate in GitHub, Stack Overflow, Discord, Reddit, and other relevant developer forums. Champion programs such as hackathons, Q&A sessions, and office hours to support and grow the Buildkite community. Deliver technical talks and workshops at developer events, focusing on solving real problems rather than sales pitches.
  • Collaborate on Product Strategy and Messaging: Work closely with Product teams to understand technical roadmaps, upcoming features, and strategic direction. Translate complex technical capabilities into compelling, market-ready messaging that resonates with practitioners and clearly communicates value propositions.
  • Create Technical Content That Resonates: Write architectural guides, tutorials, demo videos, and build sample repos that show how to solve real software delivery challenges with Buildkite. Support product launches by creating technical content that translates new features into practical use cases and implementation guides. Your work should reflect the day-to-day realities of platform engineers and DevOps practitioners.
  • Lead Education on AI-Powered Software Delivery: Develop content and programs explaining how AI is transforming software delivery workflows, from agentic pipeline design to end-to-end workflow automation. Help practitioners adopt these emerging technologies confidently.
  • Support Marketing Programs: Work with marketing to design programs that resonate with platform engineers and DevOps practitioners, sharing your deep audience insights and channel knowledge to improve campaign effectiveness. Track performance and help scale successful approaches.
  • Create Competitive Intelligence and Sales Assets: Analyze competitor architectures and features from a practitioner's perspective, then develop battle cards, technical comparison guides, and demo materials that help Sales and Customer Success teams engage credibly with technical evaluators.

Who you are

  • Experienced software engineer or solutions architect with 5+ years building production systems and a deep understanding of modern dev workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and the challenges engineers face daily.
  • 3+ years working in DevOps, platform engineering, or related fields with deep knowledge of tools like Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS/GCP/Azure, etc.
  • Proven ability to create clear, actionable technical content—blogs, tutorials, videos, diagrams, or open source contributions—that resonates with developer audiences.
  • Skilled public speaker comfortable presenting technical talks and leading workshops in-person and online.
  • Active participant in developer communities (GitHub, Stack Overflow, Discord), passionate about building authentic relationships and providing real value.
  • Experienced in framing technical solutions persuasively to drive adoption, with a background in developer advocacy, solutions architecture, or technical enablement preferred.
  • Data-driven and results-oriented, focused on community growth, engagement, and converting trial users into customers.
  • Passionate about developer productivity, open source, and emerging technologies—especially AI-powered software delivery innovations.

What We Offer

  • Impact and Ownership: This role is critical to Buildkite’s success. You’ll have significant autonomy to shape our developer engagement strategy and you’ll be the go-to expert for all things practitioner-related. It’s a chance to build out a developer advocacy function from the ground up, with the support of a company that values both engineering and marketing.
  • Remote-First Work Environment: Work from wherever you’re most productive – whether that’s your home office, a co-working space, or a coffee shop. We prioritize outcomes over hours, offering flexible scheduling to accommodate your style. (Our team is distributed across the US and Australia, so async communication is key.)
  • Professional Growth: We support continuous learning and development. You’ll have opportunities to attend conferences (both as a speaker and learner), pursue certifications, and dedicate some time to experiment with new technologies (yes, including the latest AI/DevOps tools). Buildkite encourages open source contributions and community involvement on company time, so you can keep your skills sharp and give back to the community.
  • Collaborative Culture: You’ll be joining a team that truly values the intersection of engineering and storytelling. We foster a collaborative environment where your technical ideas and your creative marketing ideas are equally celebrated. You’ll work closely with designers, engineers, product managers, and leadership in a flat, supportive structure. Expect a culture where everyone is excited to help our users and no question is too technical or too quirky to dive into.

If you’re excited about bridging the gap between a powerful technical product and the developers who use it – and you have the coding chops and community heart to back it up – we’d love to hear from you. Come help us engage the developer community and shape the future of CI/CD with Buildkite!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
