Working at Atlassian
Atlassians can choose where they work - whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company.
This is a remote position. To help our teams work together, this role requires you to be located in the Pacific Time Zone.
The Role
The Teamwork Platform team is looking for an experienced and passionate Principal Designer to shape and lead the experiences of Atlassian's Teamwork Graph.
As a staff-level individual contributor in an organization consisting of multiple teams across North America, Australia, and India, you'll report directly to the Head of Design, Teamwork Platform and work with cross-functional partners across a broad range of products and surfaces to make the power of the Teamwork Graph tangible for customers, internal teams, and third-party developers. You bring a strong blend of design craft, systems thinking, and strategic communication.
As a design leader within the Teamwork Platform org, you'll play a key role in codifying the user-centered vision, strategy, and roadmap for the graph experience, partnering closely with engineering and product peers. You'll apply your expertise in product design, interaction design, and visual design to deliver experiences that scale, guide teams across Atlassian, and lay the foundation for platform capabilities that drive long-term value. You'll also partner with internal teams and third-party developers to shape the tools, patterns, and experiences that make the graph, and the AI built on top of it, accessible, useful, and ready to build on.
As a Principal Designer on the Teamwork Platform team, you'll focus on shaping the design strategy and execution for Teamwork Graph, while contributing to the broader platform experiences that power Atlassian products at scale. This includes touchpoints across Data Experiences, Enterprise Growth, and internal developer surfaces.
  • Craft and communicate a clear design vision for Teamwork Graph and the platform capabilities built on top of it, ensuring they deliver value across user, admin, and developer experiences.
  • Lead conceptual and systems design work that turns graph-powered capabilities into intuitive, extensible product experiences, and sets direction for teams across Atlassian.
  • Drive high-craft execution from early framing through to detailed interaction and visual design, partnering closely with product and engineering to land cohesive, durable solutions.
  • Identify and shape new opportunities using product signals, customer insight, and systems thinking; help prioritize the work that unlocks the most leverage across the platform.
  • Collaborate with other designers across Teamwork Platform to evolve patterns, tooling, and interaction models that work across surfaces, while staying grounded in the unique needs of Graph, Growth, and Data Experiences.
  • Build alignment across disciplines and organizations; help teams design with systems in mind and connect their work to the platform capabilities underneath.
  • Contribute to a strong, inclusive design culture by mentoring peers, shaping critique, and modeling thoughtful, scalable design practice.
  • Stay current on platform UX trends, distributed systems, and graph-based design patterns, and bring that perspective to how we evolve our capabilities over time.

  • 10+ years of experience designing software products, with a strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality, end-to-end work across complex systems and platforms.
  • Experience designing for platform capabilities at scale, including developer tools, distributed systems, extensibility models, or data-rich surfaces.
  • Proven success designing for enterprise-grade environments with high availability, security, and performance requirements at the scale of a multi-product platform serving millions of users.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate abstract technical concepts into clear, intuitive, and durable user experiences.
  • Strong systems thinking and strategic framing skills. You know how to identify leverage, shape direction in ambiguous spaces, and advocate for the right outcomes.
  • You have a strong grasp of complex technical systems. You use that understanding to design effectively, collaborate deeply with engineering, and bring clarity to ambiguous problems.
  • Excellent communicator (presentations, written, and verbal) and collaborator with strong executive presence. You've built strong cross-functional relationships and can align partners across design, product, engineering, and marketing. You're comfortable navigating high-stakes conversations and influencing executive stakeholders, including at the C-suite level.
  • Recognized for your craft. You set a high bar in interaction and visual design, and bring thoughtful execution to every stage of the design process.
  • Experience mentoring others and contributing to a strong design culture through critique, modeling, and shaping team rituals.
  • Comfortable operating across teams and orgs, leading through influence, without formal authority. You lead with empathy and resilience; for our customers, to build products they love, and for your teammates, to help build a workplace we're proud of. You take feedback from anywhere, consider it with care, and fold it into your thinking and your work.
  • Curious and growth-minded. You're motivated by complex problems and energized by new challenges in an evolving product and organization. Our teams and processes will continue to evolve. We strive to keep learning and improving; both from the work, and from each other.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong preference for experience designing graph-based systems or working with structured relationships across large, distributed product environments.
  • Strong preference for experience with AI-powered design surfaces and/or platform applications of AI and machine learning.
  • Background in designing 0-1 products or platform capabilities, especially those launched across multiple teams or surfaces.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
