At Obscura we are building the next generation of VPN services – ones that are actually private and seamless. We fight to make the Internet open and private by default. We obsessively design and build delightful products that help our customers secure and free their internet access.

We’re seeking a Design Engineer passionate about crafting/building exceptional experiences and shaping the future of privacy-tech products. You'll collaborate with the founder and our top-tier engineers to code up (re)imagined product experiences, realize marketing efforts, and shape our product strategy.

Your goal: make Obscura's products intuitive, accessible, and distinguished – simplifying open and private Internet access for our users.

Obscura is growing quickly and is funded by prominent Angels and investors.

What you will be doing
  • Designing new features and experiences for Obscura VPN

  • Writing robust and maintainable frontend code

  • Driving product initiatives from ideation to design and implementation

  • Collaborating with the founder, marketing, and engineering teams

  • Managing and prioritizing your workload across multiple focus areas and projects

  • Contributing to the strategy, planning, and execution of the product roadmap

  • Considering all parts when crafting experiences: from copy to animation to business impact

What we look for in you

  • 4+ years of relevant experience working with product and engineering teams

  • Mastery of relevant design tools (e.g. Figma, Sketch, Rive, etc.)

  • Mastery of frontend programming in React and vanilla HTML/CSS/JS

  • A portfolio that shows work you were directly responsible for designing and developing

  • Proven ability to thrive and excel in remote teams

  • You can take ambiguous problem spaces and shape them into clear and elegant solutions

  • Deep care and attention to user feedback to arrive at well-crafted solutions

  • Discriminatingly borrow from existing design patterns or rethink them where appropriate for the problem at hand

  • The ability to learn new skills and rapidly iterate to drive product initiatives forward

  • A desire to strive for excellence in your work until all details are attended to

  • The ability to explain your work, process, and decisions and proactively seek feedback to help you produce your best work

  • You surface pivotal decisions and requirements early and proactively coordinate with team members

Nice to haves
  • Experience with privacy-tech products

  • You have worked with Astro, React, Typescript, SwiftUI

  • You have worked at a startup

  • Personal interest in advancing digital privacy
