Role overview

We are looking for an experienced Senior Data Scientist to join a high-impact Ads Data Science team focused on scaling and optimizing a rapidly growing advertising marketplace.

Advertising is a core revenue driver, and this role sits at the heart of building a high-performance, data-driven marketplace ecosystem — where advertisers, users, and platform dynamics interact in real time.

You will work on problems such as auction dynamics, pricing, targeting, relevance, and marketplace efficiency, leveraging large-scale data and advanced modeling techniques to drive measurable business impact.

Commitments Required: 8 hours per day with an overlap of 4 hours with PST.

Employment type: Contractor or FTE

Duration of contract: long-term, but with 3-month increments based on performance

Location:

Responsibilities
  • Design and apply data science and machine learning solutions to improve ads marketplace performance
  • Analyze large-scale datasets to uncover patterns in marketplace behavior (bidding, pricing, engagement, conversion)
  • Develop models for prediction, anomaly detection, and optimization
  • Define and track core marketplace metrics (supply/demand balance, auction efficiency, advertiser value)
  • Build data assets (tables, dashboards, self-serve tools) to empower product and engineering teams
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to translate marketplace challenges into DS solutions
  • Design and analyze A/B experiments and causal inference frameworks to validate impact
  • Communicate insights and recommendations to cross-functional stakeholders

Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in Data Science, Machine Learning, or Applied Statistics
  • Strong experience working on marketplace platforms (e.g., ads platforms, ride-sharing, e-commerce, or similar two-sided ecosystems)
  • Deep understanding of marketplace dynamics (auction systems, pricing, supply/demand, ranking, or allocation problems)
  • Strong foundation in statistical modeling, machine learning, and experimental design
  • Experience with large-scale data processing (e.g., Spark, Hadoop, Hive, or BigQuery)
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL and working with large relational datasets
  • Strong programming skills in Python (preferred) or R
  • Experience building and interpreting A/B tests and causal inference models
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams and influence product decisions through data
Nice to Have
  • Experience in online advertising / ad tech ecosystems
  • Experience with auction optimization, bidding strategies, or ranking systems
  • Familiarity with real-time systems or large-scale recommendation systems
  • Experience building self-serve analytics tools or data platforms

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
