About Onebrief

Onebrief is collaboration and AI-powered workflow software designed specifically for military staffs. By transforming this work, Onebrief makes the staff as a whole superhuman - meaning faster, smarter, and more efficient.

We take ownership, seek excellence, and play to win with the seriousness and camaraderie of an Olympic team. Onebrief operates as an all-remote company, though many of our employees work alongside our customers at military commands around the world.

Founded in 2019 by a group of experienced planners, today, Onebrief’s team spans veterans from all forces and global organizations, and technologists from leading-edge software companies. We’ve raised $123m+ from top-tier investors, including Battery Ventures, General Catalyst, Insight Partners, and Human Capital, and today, Onebrief is valued at $1.1B. With this continued growth, Onebrief is able to make an impact where it matters most.

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Data Infrastructure Engineer (Distributed Data & Cloud Platforms) to design, build, and operate distributed, event-driven systems that move, transform, and secure information from the edge to the cloud.

You will work across infrastructure, data, and application layers to deliver reliable, real-time data pipelines and services that underpin Onebrief’s mission. The systems you design will enable our customers, military staffs operating in complex, high-stakes environments, to make faster and smarter decisions with confidence.

This role blends software craftsmanship, distributed systems engineering, and a deep respect for reliability, observability, and governance.

About You

You are a systems-minded engineer who thrives at the intersection of data, distributed systems, and cloud architecture. You think holistically, understanding how data flows, how systems interact, and how to design for long-term scalability, and integrity.

You are hands-on, curious, and continuously learning. You enjoy diving into new technologies, building modular architectures (aligned with MOSA principles), and delivering solutions that are elegant, observable, and secure. You are comfortable in multiple settings, from writing services to tuning infrastructure, and take pride in building platforms that let others move faster and safer.

What You Will Do
  • Design and implement event-driven, distributed architectures using Kafka, PostgreSQL, S3, and Lakehouse technologies (e.g., Delta Lake, Iceberg).

  • Develop and operate end-to-end services in Java and TypeScript (React/Node) that interact with data pipelines, APIs, and dashboards.

  • Engineer for reliability and observability on fault-tolerant, eventually consistent systems that perform across multi-cloud and hybrid environments.

  • Model, govern, and secure data using metadata, lineage, and access-control principles that support compliance and auditability.

  • Implement instrumentation, performance analytics, and cost optimization across systems.

  • Collaborate across Infrastructure, Product, and Engineering teams to ensure architectural cohesion and MOSA-aligned design.

  • Continuously learn, evaluate, and apply emerging technologies in distributed data, governance, and DevSecOps.

What We Look For
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including hands-on work with distributed or data-intensive systems.

  • Proven experience running production workloads using Kafka, PostgreSQL, and S3, ideally with CDC, ETL/ELT, or streaming data pipelines.

  • Proficiency in Java and JavaScript/TypeScript, with experience in both backend and front-end systems.

  • Strong grasp of distributed systems principles, including replication, partitioning, idempotency, and consistency trade-offs.

  • Experience deploying and monitoring workloads on AWS or Azure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or Bicep).

  • Understanding of data governance concepts, such as lineage, schema evolution, and access-control frameworks.

  • Familiarity with MOSA, modular, or microservices architectures emphasizing interoperability and reusability.

  • Systems thinker and continuous learner who bridges software, data, and infrastructure domains.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with metadata and catalog services (e.g., Apache Atlas, OpenMetadata, Amundsen, Glue Data Catalog).

  • Knowledge of policy-based access control (OPA, Keycloak, IAM).

  • Familiarity with real-time analytics or stream processing (Flink, Materialize, Kafka Streams).

  • Exposure to federated or multi-region architectures.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
