As a Senior Data Infrastructure Engineer, you will build and maintain a comprehensive data platform, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and optimize data processes to enhance mental healthcare technology.
The summary above was generated by AI

Headway’s mission is a big one – to build a new mental health care system everyone can access. We’ve built technology that helps people find great therapists with the first software-enabled national network of providers accepting insurance.

1 in 4 people in the US have a treatable mental health condition, but the majority of providers don’t accept insurance, making therapy too expensive for most people. Headway is building a new mental healthcare system that everyone can access by making it easy for therapists to accept insurance and scale their practice.

Headway was founded in 2019. Since then, we’ve grown into a diverse, national network of over 60,000 mental healthcare providers across all 50 states who run their practice on our software and have served over 1 million patients. We’re a Series D company with over $325m in funding from a16z (Andreessen Horowitz), Accel, GV (formerly Google Ventures), Spark Capital, Thrive Capital, Forerunner Ventures and Health Care Service Corporation.

We want your time here to be the most meaningful experience of your career. Join us, and help change mental healthcare for the better.

About Data Platform at Headway

Building a new mental healthcare system at Headway is only possible because of the scale and leverage that software can provide. The Data Platform team at Headway is a small but mighty team building our Snowflake data platform, data ingestion tooling, AWS infrastructure, CI/CD, and data developer experience to help Headway deliver best-in-class experience for our patients and therapists. As we scale, we're looking for an experienced Data Platform Engineer to help us design and build infrastructure to support the growth of our data engineering, data analyst and machine learning teams. You’ll work closely with our Data Analytics & Engineering teams, Product Engineering, and Machine Learning teams to support analytics needs as we grow in traffic, data, and scale.

Principles that guide us:

Focus on the mission: We view software as a means of effecting change in the world, not as an end unto itself. We write software to empower our patients and therapist to better solve the problems they’re facing.

Ship small, learn fast: We are building new and novel products and believe that we learn what our users need by quickly shipping and iteration.

Everything is a product: Whether it's our patient search experience or a developer productivity improvement, we treat everything we build at Headway as a product with end-users in mind.

Optimize for trust: We believe that engineers should be continually learning. To learn effectively and to be productive, engineers must feel safe asking questions and discussing mistakes.

Who you are

We’re looking for data-focused software engineers who have the ability to create clarity from ambiguity and build quickly and strategically in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. Below are some additional experiences we think help engineers succeed at Headway.

Experience we’re seeking:

  • 6+ years of experience as a Data Platform Engineer, Software / Infrastructure Engineer specializing in Data, or Data Engineer in a high-code environment.
  • Building & maintaining a full-stack data platform including data warehousing, data ingestion & other data pipelines, orchestration, monitoring & alerting, CI/CD, developer tooling, cloud infrastructure, and third party integrations.
  • Understanding of data warehouse architecture patterns, performance tuning, and permissions management strategies across a variety of use cases on a MPP analytics database (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, AWS RDS)
  • Service mindset - able to collaborate & communicate actively with stakeholders with varying levels of technical expertise to design best practice, easy-to-use solutions and build strong cross-functional relationships.
  • Designing & maintaining cloud infrastructure resources (AWS, GCP, Azure) with infrastructure-as-code frameworks (Terraform, Pulumi, AWS CDK, etc.)
  • Strong Python skills, good foundational knowledge of SQL
  • Working with and maintaining data pipeline orchestration infrastructure (preferably Airflow/Astronomer)
  • Bonus points if you have experience with:
    • APM tools like DataDog, New Relic, custom alerting/monitoring, data quality & observability tooling
    • ETL/ELT best practices
    • Data security & compliance practices especially with PHI (we are a healthcare company!) or in other regulated environments
    • Greenfield development in a startup or other high-growth environment
    • Docker, Github Actions, DBT, Spark
You'll love this role if you want to:
  • Change the trajectory of a startup striving to redefine access to mental health in America
  • Work on a highly collaborative, cross-functional engineering team in order to build the best products for therapists, patients, physician and payer partners, and/or your teammates at Headway
  • Build and improve tooling to make engineering more streamlined and efficient
  • Help establish and engrain best practices throughout our codebases
  • Work in a fast-paced, iterative development process -- we release changes to our products multiple times per day!
  • Contribute to our engineering culture, processes, and documentation with the same thought and care that we do our software (one of our engineering cultural principles is “Everything is a Product”)
Compensation & Benefits:

The expected base pay range for this position is $198,050 - $233,000, based on a variety of factors including qualifications, experience, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for performance-based variable compensation and an equity grant, depending on the position and level.

We are committed to offering a comprehensive and competitive total rewards package, including robust health and wellness benefits, retirement savings, and meaningful ownership opportunities through equity. Compensation decisions are made holistically, ensuring fairness and alignment with market benchmarks while recognizing individual contributions and potential.

  • Benefits offered include:
    • Equity compensation
    • Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage
    • HSA / FSA
    • 401K
    • Work-from-Home Stipend
    • Therapy Reimbursement
    • 16-week parental leave for eligible employees
    • Carrot Fertility annual reimbursement and membership
    • 13 paid holidays each year as well as a Holiday Break during the week between December 25th and December 31st
    • Flexible PTO
    • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
    • Training and professional development

We believe a team's strength is in its people, and we cannot achieve this mission without a team that reflects the diversity of this problem – across race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, national origin, religion, family status, disability, military status, and experience.

Headway is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. As part of this commitment, Headway will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided with reasonable accommodations. What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
