The Sr. CRM Marketing Manager will lead CRM strategy for sports campaigns, optimize marketing automation, and analyze performance to enhance user engagement.

About the Role
The Athletic is seeking an experienced lifecycle marketer to join the CRM team. In this role, you will own the development of programs across the user journey that increase engagement, build daily reading habits, and drive subscription growth among sports fans. The ideal candidate is a customer-focused, results-driven marketer with a strong track record of using CRM to shape user behavior through thoughtful experimentation and optimization. You excel at turning analysis into strategy, working seamlessly with cross-functional partners, and driving measurable performance improvements.
This role is 100% remote for candidates currently residing in the United States or Canada.
Responsibilities
- Develop and optimize CRM programs that drive engagement, conversion and retention throughout the user lifecycle.
- Drive continuous improvement through sophisticated experimentation programs that measure both immediate and long-term business impact.
- Collaborate with Design and Marketing teams to ensure lifecycle communications reinforce value propositions and support the evolution of our brand.
- Identify opportunities for hyper-personalization, behavioral targeting, and AI tools to deepen reader engagement and power new customer journeys.
- Partner with Data teams to build reporting dashboards and translate user insights into actionable lifecycle strategies.
- Integrate major sports moments and product launches into lifecycle programs through cross-functional collaboration.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation and performance reporting for all live lifecycle journeys.
- Oversee transactional email operations, compliance, and delivery.
- Communicate proactively and clearly with business leaders and stakeholders about strategy, execution, and performance tracking to plan.
Requirements
- 7+ years experience planning, executing, and analyzing lifecycle marketing programs, with strong expertise in multi-channel marketing automation.
- Superior project management and communication skills with the technical skills to translate stakeholder and business needs into actionable items.
- Proven experience leading an email/CRM management function.
- Extensive experience working with CRM platforms (Iterable, Braze, Sailthru, etc.) .
- Demonstrated understanding of email marketing best practices and technical infrastructure, including deliverability, hygiene and IP health as well as compliance laws such as CAN-SPAM.
- Strong quantitative and qualitative rigor that translates performance data and customer insights into high-impact CRM programs.
- Experience with A/B and multivariate testing, experiment design, and post-campaign analysis.
- Proficient with drag-and-drop email builders and basic HTML troubleshooting.
- Interest in sports and media is a plus, but is not required.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
The annual base salary range for this role is $110,000.00 - $130,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
