Hybrid - This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Oshawa or Markham office of General Motors of Canada Company three times per week, at minimum.
General Motors Canada is seeking an exceptional lawyer with strategic business acumen and proven collaborative skills to join the legal team in Oshawa as Senior Counsel. The successful candidate will report to the Vice President, Lead Counsel for Canada and will work closely with both the GM Canada legal department and the GM global legal staff of more than 200 lawyers. This position will be located at GM Canada's offices in Oshawa or Markham, Ontario.

  • The Senior Counsel will handle all areas of labour and employment law for the organization, including human rights, occupational health and safety, pensions and benefits, HR policy, and labour arbitrations and negotiations.
  • The selected candidate will also provide litigation support and management for commercial disputes and lead a team of two lawyers handling regulatory and litigation matters.
  • The individual will provide strategic advice and counsel to senior leaders across the organization, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work effectively across internal functions and businesses.
  • The Senior Counsel will act as a key business partner and will contribute to GM Canada's success by combining both legal and business expertise to support the company's operations and strategic goals
  • Assist legal staff in other areas as required


Additional Description
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Minimum of 10 years of top-tier private practice or in-house experience handling labour and employment.
  • Experience in litigation management, and experience gained in the automotive, technology, manufacturing or consumer products sector would be an asset.
  • Superior personal and professional integrity and strong communication skills
  • Business-minded lawyer who can provide a top-down perspective while maintaining a sleeves-rolled-up willingness to take on a significant working role in the company.
  • Ability to manage multiple large-scale projects and past success forging collaborative relationships with business units in a fast-paced environment.
  • French language proficiency would be an asset but is not a requirement.
